Take From Change Unknown – Word Problems: There were 7 kids at the park. Some kids ran home. There is 1 kid left. How many kids ran home?

7-X=1 Unknown Solve for the unknown:

7-1=6 X=6

Considerations: Students need to be exposed to many ways to represent the unknown (empty box, letters, symbols). Problems in this lesson prepare students to work with equations and word problems. Both skills are needed in the following lessons.

Steps: 1. Pay attention to the numbers in the word problems or equations. 2. Read or write an equation using a symbol or letter to represent the unknown. 3. Solve for the unknown.

1. Equation 

State the objective: Today I will use objects to solve problems with the change unknown.

7–X=1 X= 

Explain that, since the largest number is the first number of a subtraction equation, and the second number, or the change, is unknown in this equation, the unknown will be a smaller number. To get a smaller number, the two numbers given in the equation can be subtracted.



Model how to write the equation 7-1= and use 7 objects, taking one away, to find the difference of 6.

7–1=6 

Explain that the unknown number is 6 and write X= 6 under the subtraction equation.

7–X=1 7–1=6 X= 6 

Model using objects to prove that 7 – 6 = 1.

2. Word Problem 

Restate the objective: Today I will use objects to solve problems with the change unknown.



Read the following word problem: Simon had 12 books. He left some books at school, so now he has 4 books. How many books did he leave at school?



Model how to use the information from the word problem to write a change unknown equation.

12 –  = 4 = 

Explain that, since the largest number is the first number of a subtraction equation and the second number, or the change, is unknown in this equation, the unknown will be a smaller number. To get a smaller number the two numbers given in the equation can be subtracted.



Model how to write the equation 12 - 4= and use 12 objects, taking 4 away, to find the difference of 8.

Explain that the unknown number is 8 and write equation.

 = 8 under the subtraction

Model using objects to prove that 12 – 8 = 4.
