Explain that, since the largest number is the first number of a subtraction equation, and the second number, or the change, is unknown in this equation, the unknown will be a smaller number. To get a smaller number, the two numbers given in the equation can be subtracted.
Model how to write the equation 7-1= and use 7 objects, taking one away, to find the difference of 6.
7–1=6
Explain that the unknown number is 6 and write X= 6 under the subtraction equation.

Read the following word problem: Simon had 12 books. He left some books at school, so now he has 4 books. How many books did he leave at school?
