Game Notes FIRST PITCH Gettysburg plays its home opener this afternoon as it takes on Penn State-York in a non-conference outing. ALL-TIME SERIES The Bullets hold a 5-0 lead over the Nittany Lions in the all-time series that dates back to 2008. LAST TIME OUT The Bullets closed out their Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. with a doubleheader split versus Merchant Marine this past Saturday, falling 6-2 in the opener before winning 4-2 in nine innings in the nightcap. Senior Luke Lawrence finished 5-for-8 on the day while junior Will Anderson went 4-for-9 with four RBIs, and he also slugged two home runs in the nightcap to tie a school record. He tied the game with a solo shot in the sixth before giving the Bullets a three-run lead with a two-run blast in the ninth. He became the first Bullet to homer twice since Mike Backus ’10 in a 9-5 loss at Johns Hopkins University in 2010. Junior Aaron Bezio earned the win on the mound in the nightcap for Gettysburg, throwing eight innings and tying a career-high with nine strikeouts before freshman Will Wortmann recorded the final three outs to pick up his first collegiate save. LAST MEETING WITH PENN STATE-YORK All nine position-player starters hit safely for the Bullets and Gettysburg defeated Penn State-York 13-3 last season here at Kirchhoff Field last season. Connor Tom missed hitting for the cycle by a triple, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Henry Klimowicz also enjoyed a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Will Anderson went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. On the mound, Eric Brown scattered seven hits while allowing just three runs (one earned) and striking out a career-high seven. FLORIDA TRIP After opening the season with a 12-0 win at Hood College, the Bullets played 10 games during their Spring Break trip to Florida, finishing 6-4 over the
Team McDaniel Washington College Haverford Swarthmore Dickinson Ursinus Gettysburg Johns Hopkins Muhlenberg Franklin & Marshall
stretch. A number of players enjoyed big performances for the Orange and Blue, including junior catcher Will Anderson. For the trip, Anderson batted .400, slugged .771, and racked up 15 RBIs while blasting a pair of home runs in the final game of the week. Senior outfielder Luke Lawrence also performed well at the plate, batting an even .500 (18-for-36) while scoring 12 runs. Others offensive contributors included sophomore infielder Logan Sneed, who batted .433, sophomore infielder Chuck Probst, who batted .400, and junior outfielder/DH Connor Tom, who hit .389 and scored 13 runs. In addition, senior first baseman Henry Klimowicz provided a highlight with a walkoff single that gave the Bullets a 4-3 win over Coast Guard. On the mound, juniors Rich Power and Aaron Bezio each went 2-0. Power allowed just two earned runs over 14 innings and worked a three-hit, seveninning shutout versus Rivier. He is now 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA on the season. Bezio yielded only four earned runs over 16 1/3 innings while striking out 22. After starting the trip with a 1 1/3 inning save, he came back the next day to carry a perfect game into the seventh inning in a win over Finlandia. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Gettysburg has already had three players earned Centennial Conference Player or Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Junior Rich Power was named Pitcher of the Week after opening the year with 13 scoreless innings over his first two starts. Senior outfielder Luke Lawrence was named Player of the Week after starting the year on a 9-for-12 tear before junior catcher Will Anderson captured the same honor one week later in honor of his big week in Florida. TAKE ALS YARD The Gettysburg College baseball team is teaming up in the fight against ALS once again through its Take ALS Yard initiative. Throughout the season, the Bullets will sell Take ALS Yard hats and t-shirts at the table next to the home dugout, with all proceeds going to Project ALS. The team will also accept donations at the Take ALS Yard website, takealsyard.com. Now in its fourth season, Take ALS Yard has raised over $25,000 for ALS research and was inspired by two friends of the Gettysburg College baseball program who were diagnosed with ALS and have since passed away.
