Game Notes OPENING FACE-OFF Coming off a victory in their season opener a week ago, the fifth-ranked Bullets take on the second-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls in one of the top nonconference men’s lacrosse match-ups in Division III. ALL-TIME SERIES Salisbury holds a 24-7 lead in the all-time series that started in 1992. The two teams have met at least once every year since then, including eight times in the NCAA Division III Tournament and four times in the national semifinals. LAST MEETING WITH SALISBURY Tim Brady made 14 saves and the Bullets used a strong start and finish to register a 12-6 victory at Salisbury, ranked seventh at the time, last season. The Bullets never trailed after opening the game on a 6-0 run. The Sea Gulls pulled to within 7-5 late in the third quarter, but that’s when Gettysburg used a 5-0 surge to pull away. Salisbury outshot the Bullets 39-34 but had a hard time denting Brady, who was making just his second career start. Brendan Morris ’15 scored three goals for Gettysburg while Jameson Smith also notched three tallies for the Bullets, who scored five of their goals inside the final minute of a quarter. Thomas Cirillo posted two goals and two assists to lead the Sea Gulls while Dan Feeney played the opening 43:56 in goal, making two saves and yielding eight goals. Anthony Stavrakis played the final 16:04 and stopped two shots while giving up four goals. LAST TIME OUT Senior Jameson Smith racked up seven points on four goals and three assists and the Bullets defeated Messiah College 12-4 in their season and home opener last Saturday. Smith tied his career-highs in both goals and points, posting his fourth career four-goal game, and had a hand in each of the team’s first six goals. The Bullets held Messiah to one goal in each quarter, with junior long-stick midfielder Chris Palladino fronting the defensive effort with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Tim Brady turned aside 11 shots for Gettysburg, which won its 11th-straight season opener and 16th-straight regular-season game. BANNER SEASON Gettysburg is coming off one of its most successful seasons in program history last year. The Bullets finished
20-1 after starting the year on a school- and Centennial Conference-record 20-game winning streak. Along the way, Gettysburg won the Centennial Conference title and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team’s 20 victories were three more than the previous school record. The Bullets bring back three All-Americans and five All-Centennial Conference selections from last season. SCOUTING THE SEA GULLS Salisbury is off to a 3-0 start, and most recently the Sea Gulls defeated 20th-ranked Montclair State University 23-7, with junior attackman Carson Kalama scoring seven goals. Salisbury also rallied to beat then-No. 2 Lynchburg College 13-11 back on Feb. 17, outscoring the Hornets 6-0 in the fourth quarter. Senior midfielder Thomas Cirillo led the Sea Gulls with four goals and two assists. The Sea Gulls return four of their top-five scorers from last season, paced by All-Americans Kalama and Cirillo. Kalama led the team with 69 points on 56 goals and 13 points while Cirillo was close behind with 42 goals and 20 assists. Salisbury also returns the Short-Stick Specialty Player of the Year in senior Preston Dabbs. This season, Cirillo has led the Sea Gulls with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists while Kalama has tossed in 11 goals. Sophomores Joshua Dean and Anthony Stavrakis have split the time in goal, with Dean posting a 7.05 goals-against average and earning the win versus Lynchburg. THREE COACHES, 1224 WINS Three of the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA men’s lacrosse history will be on the same field this afternoon in Salisbury head coach Jim Berkman, Gettysburg head coach Hank Janczyk, and Gettysburg volunteer assistant coach Dave Urick. Berkman has won more games (469) than any men’s lacrosse coach in NCAA history while Janczyk is second with 407 victories. Urick, the former head coach at Hobart (1980-89) and Georgetown (19902012), is seventh with 348 wins. Interestingly, Janczyk played under Urick, who once served as an assistant coach at Hobart, before joining Urick’s staff as an assistant coach. Janczyk also coached Berkman for one season as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University before bringing him onto his staff for two seasons when he was the head coach at Salisbury from 1983-85.
