Grand Junction Fire FC Recreation Session Planner U10 Week 7 April 30 - May 4 Theme: Receiving an Aerial Pass Aim: To learn and improve on techniques for dealing with and receiving a ball out of the air
Warm up: area 25x25 all players have a ball. Players dribbling round, using all surfaces of foot. On coaches shout of ‘throw’ they stop the ball, pick it up and throw it in the air (about 10ft) and try and control the ball coming down however they choose. Then carry on with the dribbling. Progress by: include ball mastery techniques, specify a certain foot or surfaces, specify a certain body part to receive with (chest, thigh or foot) Coaching points: close control when dribbling, eyes on the ball while its in the air, ‘cushion’ the ball with whichever body part is being used, decision of which body part to use.
Technical work: in same area half group inside square half outside with a ball. Players on inside jog round to different players on the outside. That person throws the ball up to the inside player who receives the ball and passes it back before going to find a different outside player. Rotate after 1 minute. Concentrate on foot (laces) then rotate to thigh and finally chest. Ball can be allowed to bounce once before control (no bounce on chest control) Progress by: ball isn’t allowed to bounce before receiving, specify a certain foot or thigh to use, one defender in middle to apply pressure to receivers. Coaching points: above points, approach server at speed then slow down, body behind the flight of ball, decision of body part to use dependent on flight
Game scenario: play 3v3 with all other players on outside with supply of balls. Every time a ball goes out of play, the nearest server throws it in for a player to receive unchallenged. 3 minute games, rotate out players and servers. Progress by: allow receiving player to be challenged, players must receive ball without a bounce. Coaching points: check in towards thrower, use of different body parts, support for receiver so they have options
Small sided game: now all players on the field, but with balls dotted up and down every sideline. All restarts done via throw-in, this includes goal kicks, corner kicks and free kicks (from closest available sideline). Start off unchallenged again. Progress by: receivers being challenged by defenders, end with free play Coaching points: all above coaching points, catching defence napping by taking a quick throw in instead of usual restart, being alert to this on the defensive side
