Grand Junction Fire FC Recreation Practice Planner U10 Week 1 March 19-23 Theme: Dribbling, Moves, Turns and Running with the Ball Aim: To recap and improve on using both feet and all surfaces of the foot to dribble and run with the ball and perform effective moves and turns

Warm up: Area 30x30yds All players have a ball. Dribbling around the area through as many gates as possible, 1 point for each gate. Progress by: making players do ball mastery at the gate(toe taps, foundations, roll overs, step over, inside cut, outside cut), moving/removing gates to increase special awareness, add a defender (gatekeeper) to guard some gates. Coaching points: accelerate through the gate, close control throughout the square, awareness of open gates (make sure there is no queueing at a gate), use of all 4 surfaces of the foot (inside, outside (last 3 toes), laces and sole)

Technical/fun game: ‘The Gauntlet’. Begin with one defender in a box, attacker facing. Attackers aim is to dribble into the defenders box, and out of it without defender getting the ball. Defender starts at back of their box, and can only move as attacker enters it. If defender wins ball, attacker goes back to the start, next attacker then goes. Progress by: once they get the hang of it, add a second box behind the first, and the finally a third. Aim is for attacker to get through all boxes, if defender wins ball they’re allowed to dribble unchallenged through boxes in front of them, getting all way to the end means they switch with that attacker. Coaching points: all above points, use of the 3 last toes to change directions very quickly, few moves just changes of pace and direction, drop a shoulder.

Game scenario: Area 40x25yds (15, 10 and 15ys for the length of sections). Fun game ‘Canada’. Split into uneven numbered teams (9v3, 7v3, 7v2 depending on numbers). The smaller number act as defenders in the middle of the 3 sections, remaining players split between 2 outside areas. Pass around in end area, and the run with the ball across the middle defended section to teammates on other side. Repeat. Switch defenders regularly. Progress by: maximum number of passes (3,4,5) as you want players to run with the ball across at the earliest opportunist, and for it to happen a lot, increase defender numbers (dependent on success), allow one or more defenders in end sections, include a time limit, increase/reduce size of 3 sections (dependent on success) Coaching points: all above points, eyes up for awareness of gaps between defenders in middle section, look to take first opportunity to drive through the middle (don’t pass when you have time and space in front of you), using correct part of foot for running with the ball (laces) Small sided game: area 40x30. Two even teams. Field split into thirds, players can only play in their third. They can however dribble or run with the ball into a different third. Can only pass the ball to someone in the same zone as them, to help encourage them to dribble. Rotate the players regularly to allow them to play in different zones. Progress by: allow players to play in more than one zone, allow players to pass to the next zone, have one team play numbers up if they are struggling to find space to dribble in to, finish with free play Coaching points: all above points, stay in a zone once you've dribbled ball there to help build an attack, use moves and fakes to beat defenders if necessary, have the confidence to run at players and into space
