Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE February 8-12, 2012 Temptations and Self-Control—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: I will be full of excitement when I move into my own home. But I will be having some serious thoughts that day, too. One of the last things I may want to say to you will be . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Genesis 39:7b-12

Truth • God expects believers to run from evil rather than remaining where self-control can be overwhelmed. Untruths • It’s fun to flirt with temptation as long as you bail out at the last second. • You just need to go wherever your feelings may take you. • Religious people miss too much fun because of old ideas about right and wrong.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Assign one family member to give “Stay” answers to the following scenarios and another family member to give “Run” answers. (If there only are two in your family, you may take one of the assignments.) Say: After I read each situation, we will hear ways a foolish Christian teen might justify staying close to temptation and ways a wise Christian teen might run from that temptation. A. Someone makes you feel special by texting you with flirty (and sexual) messages. B. You get to a party you wanted to attend, but find most of the people are drinking. C. The smartest student in the class tells you he will send a picture of his answer sheet to your cell phone during the exam. 5. Nail It Down: Your parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Include this thought as you pray out loud: Father, when I was younger I would run away from things that scared me and would run into my parents’ arms. These days, I still want to run from evil and into Your strong arms. I want the purity of my life to bring You joy and glory. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Consider how painful it would be to see your parents falling to sinful temptations in the community. Tell them how grateful you are that they run from temptations. Remind them that they are role models for you. Copyright 2012 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
