Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE February 16-19, 2011 Ease and Security—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: One thing you’ve done since the beginning of the year to bring joy in my life has been . . . This brings me joy because . . . Something I want to remember from Heart Surprise:

2. Read Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:10-15.

Truth • God’s people will face persecution and tough times in their lives. Untruths • Christians are no longer persecuted for their faith. • Only fanatics need to worry about religious prejudice. • God doesn’t expect me to do anything that would place me in danger.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Direct family members to listen to the following story: A son asked his dad for a car for college. The dad handed him a Bible and said, “First, read this, then we’ll talk about a car.” Through the semester, the son would ask about a car. The father would ask, “Have you read the Bible I gave you?” The son would answer “yes,” but no car was purchased. At Christmas, the son complained about having no car. The dad opened the middle of the Bible and showed his son a check that had been taped to a page. He said, “This check has been waiting for you since the beginning of college. Reading the Bible would have gotten you a car by now.” Say: Wouldn’t it be a shame for us to treat God’s protection the same way the student treated his dad’s advice? Point out that while we may not get a car for reading the Bible, we can get the assurance of His presence and protection in our lives, along with so much more. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Say: Father God, protect each member of our family from evil. Help us to be ready for persecution and tough times because we know Your Word. Close this time with prayer. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents to help you with your own history. Ask them to share as many details as they can remember about 24 hours before you were born and up to the minute of your birth. Ask them to describe how they felt the first time they saw you. Thank them for sharing these memories. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
