Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE February 9-12, 2011 Respecting Church Leaders—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it is your turn, say: Hearing you say nice things about your parents blesses me. I want you to know that one of the most important things I’ve learned from you is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: 1 Timothy 5:17
Truth • God expects us to respect and appreciate the leaders of the church. Untruths • Respecting leaders is an old-fashioned idea that has no place in our lives. • I will show some respect to leaders if they show respect to me first. • Recent scandals only prove that you can’t trust church leaders.
3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Ask: What actions can we take to show respect to those who lead our church well and those who lead us by preaching and teaching? Make a list of these suggestions. After hearing responses, share the following ideas: • Include them in our prayers. • Send them a note to encourage them. • Have them and their family over for a meal. • Provide a gift card from time to time. Point out that Scripture encourages us to show respect and to give thanks to those who lead the church well—especially those who help us understand the gospel through preaching and teaching. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Lead in prayer. Ask each family member to say a sentence prayer for someone who does a great job of leading the church. Close by asking God to bless the leaders in your church responsible for speaking the gospel and for teaching the members of your family. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents: If you had an opportunity to change your career/job, what would you do that’s different from what you are doing today? Listen to their responses and thank them for sharing. Ask them to pray with you as you seek guidance for your future job. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
