Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE October 19-22, 2011 Guarding Your Reputation—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it is your turn, say: Thanks for caring about my thoughts and opinions. If I could change one decision I have made, it would be . . . The reason I would have made a different decision is . . . Sharing my thoughts makes me feel . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Matthew 16:21-24

Truth • God expects us to guard our reputation and our witness. Untruths • No one cares about how you act or what you say. • What you say and do is no one’s business. • You are free to act in any way you want, regardless of the consequences.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Say: Please vote by saying “yes” or “no” to indicate whether each of these actions protects your reputation and/or witness: • Having a social drink with friends who go to church with you. • Using curse words that are used and accepted by other students. • Lying to a parent to protect yourself or some friends. • Deciding not to get into a car alone with someone from the opposite sex. • Deciding to walk away from friends who are telling racial jokes. • Sneaking out of your house after your parents go to sleep. Say: Satan wants us to ruin our witness and to ruin the witness of others. Let’s take extra care to honor Christ with all our actions all the time. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Say: Father, help _____ (name of family member) know how to protect his/her reputation and witness. Repeat the prayer for each family member. Close this time in prayer. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: List your three favorite restaurants. Ask your parents to guess which three are on your list. Try to guess their three favorite restaurants. Say: It is good for us to be able to understand our likes and dislikes. Let’s share other likes and dislikes in the future.
