Texas State beat Midwestern 46-0 in Vernon on their way to an unbeaten 11-0 season and a Tangerine Bowl championship.

Tarleton State The Tarleton football team headed to Livingston, Ala. for their second game of the season, but left with their second loss of the season. The Texans fell to the Tigers 42-35 after a last-ditch effort came up just short for Tarleton. Nick Stephens led the offense with 32-of-51 passing for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Clifton Rhodes had his second straight 100-yard game receiving after hauling in nine catches for 147 yards and a score. Devon Gray also caught a touchdown. Brandon Lowery provided the threat on the ground with two rushing scores. Defensively, Tarleton was led by Marquis Wadley, who had 15 solo tackles, and Desmond Jackson, who had the Texans’ lone turnover with an interception. This week, Tarleton will head to San Marcos to take on Texas State at 6 p.m on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Texas A&M-Commerce Did not play last week.

Texas A&M-Kingsville The Javelina defense appears to be in mid-season form through the first two weeks of the season. They are allowing only 8.5 points and 52.5 rushing yards per game. They have not allowed more than 220 yards of total offense in either game. On Saturday against Minot State, the Javelinas gave up their only touchdown on a trick play by the Beavers. They executed a wide receiver reverse pass that went for a 69-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After the first quarter, the Beavers gained only 109 yards over the final three quarters. Running back Jonathan Woodson is a four-time track & field sprint All-American and he has been showing his speed on the football field. He had the best rushing performance of his career against Minot State with 170 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. He also added four catches for 20 yards and finished with 225 all-purpose yards, the second highest total of his career. Woodson has been the Javs starting running backs for only eight games, but he has put up magnificent totals. He has gained at least 100 all-purpose yards in every start and has gone over 150 all-purpose yards five times. He has carried the ball 157 times for 816 yards and eight touchdowns. He has 30 receptions for 238 yards and a touchdown. He has 1,369 all-purpose yards in those eight games for an average of 171 per game. Junior Robert McCormick has been a back-up in each of his first two seasons playing for the Javelinas, but has moved into a starting role this year. He has compiled nine tackles and broken up three pass plays. In his first two years, he made 26 tackles with most coming on special teams. On Saturday, McCormick had the best game of his career against Minot State. He recorded five tackles and picked off the first two passes of his career. He returned the first one 16 yards and the second one 24 yards. It is the first two interception game by a Javelina since Jeff Edwards picked off two passes against Tarleton State on October 3, 2009. Sophomore wide receiver Robert Armstrong has been lighting up the scoreboard for the Javelinas with two touchdowns in each of the first two games of the year. This comes after a red-shirt freshman season in which he earned Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention honors while scoring seven total touchdowns. On Saturday, Armstrong put the Hoggies on the board with a pair unbelievable catches in the first quarter. The first was a diving, over-the shoulder grab that gained 42 yards. Two plays later, he made a diving catch in the back of the endzone while dragging both feet in bounds for a 31-yard score. Armstrong finished the game with five catches and a career high 103 yards. He added his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter when a blown coverage left him wide open in the endzone.
