Due to the addition of Incarnate Word, all 14 LSC football teams will play 10 conference games with four crossover and six division contests. The senior from Winnsboro, Texas, completed 58 percent (28-of-48) of his passes for 349 yards to post a top-20, single-game mark in the ASU record books for the fifth time in his career. In all he completed passes to nine different receivers in the contest. Markeith Jones, Angelo State University, intercepted Eastern New Mexico quarterback Wesley Wood’s desperation toss on fourth down and ran out the clock during his return to seal Angelo State’s 41-38 season-opening win Saturday. Jones notched one of ASU’s three interceptions in the contest and added three tackles, including a half tackle for a loss. Tae Evans, West Texas A&M University, performance at #2-ranked Grand Valley State was an example of how a senior captain should play. After ACU had taken a 10-6 lead over Washburn with 3:44 left in the first half, the Ichabods began to mount a drive, eventually pushing the ball to the ACU 43-yard line.  But on 2nd-and-14, Washington blasted Washburn quarterback Dane Simoneau, forcing a fumble that Mike Jones recovered for the Wildcats on their own 49-yard line. ... ACU would not trail the rest of the night. Garrett Tidwell, Angelo State University, led Angelo State with 180 all-purpose yards on seven total returns and set up the Rams game-winning drive as the team topped Eastern New Mexico, 41-38. The senior speedster averaged 20.5 yards on two punt returns and 27.8 yards per return on five kick returns. Tidwell helped Angelo State enjoy great field position all game, including a 28-yard kick return to start the Rams final drive. Jose Martinez, Midwestern State University, connected on a 34-yard field goal and was a perfect 8-for-8 on point-after tries in No. 17 Midwestern State’s 52-6 win Thursday at New Mexico Highlands. The senior from Wichita Falls remains the most accurate kicker in school history connecting on 72.7 percent (32-for-44) of his field goal attempts. Sergio Castillo, West Texas A&M University, alleviated any concerns regarding the Buffs’ placekicking this season. In his collegiate debut at #2-ranked Grand Valley State, the Mission (Texas) La Joya product booted a 40-yard field goal (his only attempt on the evening) and was 4-of-4 on point after attempts. The junior college transfer and Tucker, Ga., native rumbled for 59 yards the first time he touched the ball and finished Angelo State’s 41-38 win over Eastern New Mexico with 118 yards on 21 carries. With the effort, Carter became the first Ram player to surpass the century mark since Daniel Thomas rushed for more than 100 yards against Tarleton State, Oct. 30, 2008. Bayless missed the entire 2009 season while battling non-Hodkin’s lymphoma. The Burkburnett, Texas native caught two passes for 31 yards. V’Keon Lacey picked up where he left off last season on Saturday when the senior wide receiver tied for the team lead with seven catches and added a touchdown grab. Lacey led the Rams and Lone Star Conference with 74 catches in his first season at ASU in 2009. Lacey was second among Angelo State players with 74 yards receiving against ENMU. Angelo State is bound for the Cotton Bowl, as the Rams match-up against host Texas A&M Commerce in the Harvey Martin Classic Saturday. The game will kickoff at 5 p.m.

Texas A&M-Commerce The 2010 recruiting class had a significant impact on the Lions’ 33-10 win over Upper Iowa. Freshman Kenzee Jackson sparked A&M-Commerce in the second half with an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and he also had a team-best seven catches for 79 yards. Fellow newcomer wide receiver Jillian Hayes had three catches for 25 yards. Rookie punter Cameron Frosch had five punts for an average of 45.8 yards per kick, the highest since Juan Velasco averaged 48.3 yards a kick against Abilene Christian on September 13, 2008. Junior running back Marcus Graham scored twice against the Peacocks for the first multi-touchdown game of his career. The last Lion to rush for multiple touchdowns was when quarterback Adam Farkes scored twice against Eastern New Mexico, last year on September 19th. Freshman Kenzee Jackson sparked A&M-Commerce in the second half with an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and he also had a team-best seven catches for 79 yards. The last time that the Lions had a kickoff return for a touchdown at home was when Nabil El-Amin ran back a UCO kick 97 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14 on Sept. 29, 2007. Following a redshirt year, La’Ryon Witherspoon scored his first career touchdown in the final seconds of the win over Upper Iowa. The Arlington, Texas native broke through the right side of the A&M-Commerce offensive line and ran 39 yards for the game’s final touchdown. Sophomore kicker Ahmed Abo-Mahmood had made 29 consecutive extra points heading into Saturday’s season opener against Upper Iowa. He was able to extend the streak to 30 before his second attempt against the Peacocks was blocked. The Lions started out the season at home for the first time since the 2004 campaign and won for the first time in the season opener at home since the Lions posted a 43-28 win over Harding in 1996. The Lions offense recorded 26 first downs against the Peacocks, the most since a 28 first down effort against Eastern New Mexico, last year. It is the most at home since a 27 first down effort against Midwestern State on October 4, 1997. The Lions defense held Upper Iowa to just 2 of 14 on third-down conversions. Other stingy numbers include that the Peacocks only had 126 yards of total offense in the second half, including just 26 in the final 15 minutes.

Texas A&M-Kingsville What a Win The Javelinas opened the 2010 season on the road at defending national champion and consensus preseason #1 Northwest Missouri State. The following 16-7 victory will be one that fans, players and coaches will all remember for a long time. Since joining NCAA Division II in 1982 the Javelinas have met the #1 ranked team on five occasions. Prior to Thursday’s game, the Javelinas defeated then #1 Central Oklahoma, 24-21 in overtime on November 29, 1998. Prior to that win the Hogs had lost their other three matchups against #1 ranked foes. He’s Coming to Get You Matt Romig keyed a Javelina defense that limited #1 Northwest Missouri State to only 194 total yards of offense. He had 3.5 sacks for a loss of 35 yards and forced a fumble as he harrassed All-American QB Blake Bolles all game long. He recorded the most sacks by a Javelina since Donovan Gans had four on Nov. 20, 1993 at Portland State. The school record is five held by Pro Football Hall of Famer, John Randle. Romig is coming off a red-shirt freshman season that saw him lead the team with six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. He needs only 2.5 more sacks to move into the Javelina career top 10 list. This was his second multi sack game of his career. The Javelinas tallied seven sacks as a team in the game. It was the most sacks the team has accumulated in a game since registering seven on November 6, 2004 at Angelo State. Last year, the Hoggies tallied only 19 sacks as a team. Questions Answered Heading into the season, the biggest question mark on the offensive side of the ball was who was going to be the starting quarterback and how would they perform in crunch time. Junior Nate Poppell won the offseason battle to become the starter and his prize was the chance to start against #1 Northwest Missouri State. Poppell passed his first test with flying colors. Making his first appearance as a starter, he went 26-for-38 for 258 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he did not commit a single turnover in the game. He performed well on third downs going 8-12 for six first downs in third-and-long situations. Poppell showed excellent decision making skills on his third quarter touchdown run as well. Facing a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line, he faked a pass out wide and when he saw the defenders bite, he dove for the endzone and scored to give the team a two-possession lead.

West Texas A&M HARRIS RANKS AMONG BUFF ELITE– QB Taylor Harris continued his passing proliferation in the 2010 season opener at #2-ranked Grand Valley State, as he threw for 421 yards while completing 37-of-53 passing attempts. Over his 31-game career, Harris has completed 461-of-708 passes for 5,414 yards, 34 TDs and 17 interceptions. HAMPTON’S FAST START – It’s one thing to score a touchdown in your first collegiate contest. It’s another to do it on your first play from scrimmage. RB Tommy Hampton (Jr-TR, Bronx, N.Y.) took it a step further (maybe 80 steps further?) when he spun free from several Grand Valley State defenders and rushed 80 yards from scrimmage for a touchdown on the first offensive touch of his WT career. Hampton finished the evening with 99 yards on five carries, an average of 19.8 yards per rushing attempt. WILLIAMS PLAYS BIG – Tight end Tyson Williams (Jr-2L, Aldine, Texas) led all receivers in the season-opener at #2-ranked Grand Valley State, posting career highs for both receptions (14) and receiving yards (182). The Aldine (Texas) High product had long receptions of 30 and 28 yards on the evening. His previous career highs came in 2009, when he gained 171 receiving yards against Angelo State and grabbed nine receptions at Northeastern State. BURTON SHOWS BIG PLAY ABILITY – WR Stephen Burton (Sr-1L, Lakewood, Calif.) registered eight catches for 93 yards at #2-ranked Grand Valley State. Equally as impressive, but not seen on the stat sheets, were a pair of rock-solid downfield blocks that helped spring WT receivers for extra yardage. CASTILLO SOLID IN KICKING DEBUT – PK Sergio Castillo (Fr-RS, Mission, Texas) alleviated any concerns regarding the Buffs’ placekicking this season. In his collegiate debut at #2-ranked Grand Valley State, the Mission (Texas) La Joya product booted a 40-yard field goal (his only attempt on the evening) and was 4-of-4 on point after attempts. GOLDEN TOUCH – WR Brittan Golden (Jr-2L, Denver City, Texas) came out of the chute, quickly in 2010, gaining 93 receiving yards on eight receptions at #2-ranked Grand Valley State. He registered a long reception of 38 yards and had an 11-yard score, that coming when he ran a short route, then outran defenders to the end zone. EVANS LEADS BY EXAMPLE – CB Tae Evans’ (Sr-3L, Amarillo, Texas) performance at #2-ranked Grand Valley State showed why he was selected as a team captain. Against the Lakers, he registered a game-high 12 tackles (four solo, eight assists) as well as breaking up one pass attempt. BUFFS VERSUS THE BEST - West Texas A&M has made a habit of playing top-notch competition. The 2010 season saw them open on the road at #2-ranked Grand Valley State (dropping a 34-31 contest). 2009 saw WT twice face the nation’s top-ranked NCAA Division II program, opening the campaign against then#1-ranked Grand Valley State, dropping a 37-23 contest in Canyon, Texas. Then, on Oct. 17, they visited top-ranked Abilene Christian and took a 32-21 victory.
