PLAYERS OF THE WEEK SOUTH OFFENSIVE

Daryl Richardson, Abilene Christian University, SO, RB, Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS Richardson was a big part of the Wildcats earning their second LSC South Division title in three years … Richardson scored three times all in the second half to help propel the Wildcats to their fourth win over a top 25 team this season … two of the touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, but none were bigger than his final score of the game … a 23 yard run with 1 minute left in the game gave ACU a 41-34 lead and win … it was Richardson highest total of the season rushing 19 times for 98 yards and the three scores … he also added three catches out of the backfield for 41 yards giving him 139 all-purpose yards in the game … it was also Richardson’s first scores since a week 6 touchdown run at Incarnate Word

SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS Garrett Tidwell, Angelo State University, SR, PR/KR, Boyd, Texas, Boyd HS Tidwell will forever be left thinking what could have been as two long punt returns – one for a touchdown and another inside the Southeastern Oklahoma five yard line – were erased by block in the back penalties. Tidwell, who entered the game among the nation’s leaders in both kick and punt return average, still didn’t disappoint as the senior from Boyd, Texas, returned the opening kickoff of the second half 86 yards for a touchdown. It was Tidwell’s third special teams score of the season, having already logged two punt returns for touchdowns. Tidwell averaged 31 yards per return on three kickoffs, despite SOSU’s attempts to kick short.

CO-NORTH OFFENSIVE Tyler Vanderzee, East Central University, JR, QB, Chino, California, Ontario Christian HS Vanderzee completed 62.2 percent of his passes (28-of-45) for a school-record 435 yards and two touchdowns of 8 and 5 yards, both to Chris Espinoza, in the Tigers’ 36-33 victory at Texas A&M-Commerce. NORTH DEFENSIVE Perron Sellers, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, LB, La Marque, Texas, La Marque HS/Fullerton JC Sellers turned in an outstanding game for the Greyhounds at Northeastern State, recording a career-best 15 tackles with 10 solo stops. He forced a fumble in the third quarter, just three plays after ENMU tied the game at 21-all. Sellers added a third-down quarterback hurry in the third quarter and a sack in the second quarter.

NORTH SPECIAL TEAMS Armonty Bryant, East Central University, SO, Coverage, Wichita Falls, Texas, Wichita Falls HS Bryant blocked two kicks in ECU’s 36-33 win at Texas A&M-Commerce. He blocked a PAT and a 36-yard field goal attempt, both in the third quarter. His block of the field goal left the score at 26-19 in favor of the Tigers. As a defensive end, Bryant totaled four tackles, including two solo efforts. Two of his tackles led to losses of five yards, including a quarterback sack for four yards. He also had a pass breakup and was credited with three quarterback hurries.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Trent Rios, University of the Incarnate Word, had a severely sprained ankle from the previous week. He was listed as not available, then game-time decision then starter. He carried the 18 times for 85 yards and no yards lost. He scored the only UIW offensive TD. His 3 catches for 26 yards made him the only UIW player with at least one catch in every game. He returned two kickoffs for 56 yards with a long of 31. He was the game’s leading all-purpose player with his 167 yards. Josh Neiswander, Angelo State University, threw for more than 300 yards in his fourth consecutive game and tossed four touchdown passes, including the game winner in the final minute of Angelo State’s 40-33 LSC crossover win at Southeastern Oklahoma. The senior from Winnsboro, Texas, set a new singlegame completions mark for the second consecutive week, completing 37-of-60 passes for 355 yards. The yardage was the second-highest total of his career and eighth-best game in ASU history. Neiswander’s four scores tied Ned Cox for Angelo State’s all-time touchdowns mark at 54 for his career. Trailing 33-32 with 3:18 to play, Neiswander marched the Rams 77 yards in 11 plays, completing 8-of-11 passes then the two-point conversion. Neiswander’s effort moved him within 22 yards of catching Cox, ASU’s career yardage leader. Jonathon Woodson, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, since moving into the starting lineup four weeks ago, he has been playing like an All-American. A week after earning LSC South Division Offensive Player of the Week honors, he gained 199 all-purpose yards in the team’s win over #19 Midwestern State. He picked up 96 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. As a receiver, he caught a career high nine passes for 61 yards. He also added two kick returns for 42 yards. Evan Robertson, Tarleton State University, led the team in rushing with 17 carries for 110 yards and two scores. He scored the first points of the game on Saturday and then scored the touchdown that doubled the Cardinals score at the time. Robertson recorded his first 100-yard game of the season. Tyson Williams, West Texas A&M University, recorded his fourth 100+ receiving yard outing when he caught 13 passes for 171 yards and two TDs against Abilene Christian. Included among those catches was a 24-yard TD catch and run where he broke numerous tackles en route to the endzone. Damian Perkins, Tarleton State University, led the team with 10 total tackles, including three solo and seven assisted stops. He also had an interception that led to a Texan touchdown seven plays later. It was the touchdown that started the Tarleton second half run. Austin Benson, Angelo State University, registered a game-high eight tackles, including three tackles for loss, and blocked the game-tying extra point that was returned by teammate Terrance Preston for two points right before the end of the first half of Angelo State’s 40-33 LSC crossover win at Southeastern Oklahoma. Benson, a sophomore from Del Rio, Texas, led the Rams rushing attack against the Savage Storm in 2009, but did his damage on the other side of the ball in the 2010 meeting. He logged two sacks for a total of 26 yards lost and now leads ASU with 5.5 sacks from the middle linebacker position. ASU’s top returning rusher from 2009 is the team leader with 40 tackles in 2010. Roderick Benman, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, entered Saturday’s game with only two tackles on the season. He was given the start after an injury opened up a spot on the field. Benman made the most of his opportunity. He led the defense with 10 tackles, a forced fumble, quarterback hurry and a half sack. The most impressive part of his 10 tackles is that he is a down lineman and Midwestern State only ran 48 offensive plays in the game. MSU was limited to only 161 yards of total offense in the game. Caleb Randolph, West Texas A&M University, registered his second interception return for a touchdown this season when he picked off a Mitchell Gale pass and danced 76 yards for a TD against Abilene Christian. Taylor Cannon, Eastern New Mexico University, handled placekicking duties at Northeastern State, accounting for 14 points on four field goals and two pointafter-touchdown conversions. He also averaged 41.7 yards on three punts and kicked off once. Cannon’s four-for-four performance on field goals was his best game since hitting six against Southeastern Oklahoma last season.

Angelo State Special Efforts: Angelo State’s special teams have been truly special this season with four returns for touchdowns, including an 86-yard kickoff return by Garrett Tidwell Saturday. The Rams have been successful punting away the ball as well, with George Shamblen remaining among the nation’s leaders after averaging 47.7 yards per kick while placing another punt inside the 20. He’s Pretty Good: After an incredible 2009 season, Josh Neiswander’s name was already written all over ASU’s record book, but he’s not done with the aerial assault. With four touchdowns against the Savage Storm, Neiswander moved into a tie for first with Ned Cox at 54 career touchdowns. Neiswander posted a 355-yard effort against SOSU, the thirdhighest tally of his career and eighth-best tally in school history, while moving within 22 yards of Cox for the career passing record at ASU. Neiswander also completed 37 passes Saturday, improving his own single-game record which he has set twice. What’s in a Name?: Angelo State running back Tristan Carter caught eight passes, three for touchdowns against the Savage Storm. That’s the most TD’s by a Ram player since Justin Carter caught three touchdowns against West Texas A&M in 2005. Other than the stellar effort, there’s no relation. It’s Good!: Angelo State had another field goal attempt blocked Saturday but it wobbled through the uprights for three points. The 31 yarder was senior kicker Ryan Smith’s second make of the season.

Central Oklahoma Central Oklahoma dropped a 31-24 decision to Southwestern Oklahoma last week for its fifth straight loss . . . The Bronchos fell to 2-8 on the year, with five of those losses by seven points or less -- including three by one point . . . Redshirt freshman running back Josh Birmingham ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns, the ninth straight game he’s scored at least two TDs in a game as he went over the 100-yard mark for the sixth time this season . . . Birmingham has scored 21 points and 126 points, needing one more TD to tie the single-season school record for TDs and points . . . He moved into 13th place on UCO’s single-season rushing list with 1,158 yards and jumped to fifth place in all-purpose yards with 1,532 . . . Sophomore quarterback Ethan Sharp returned to the lineup after missing the previous week to injury and completed 23-of-38 passes for 268 yards and one TD . . . He now has 2,204 yards on the season, which ranks as the seventh best at UCO . . . Senior wide receiver Carter Whitson had career highs for both catches (five) and yards (85) against SWOSU . . . Junior Daniel Morrell had six catches for 51 yards, moving him to sixth in career receptions (104) and ninth in career yards (1,517) at UCO.

East Central East Central University’s clinching of a share of the LSC North championship signals the first time that the Tigers have won a division title since joining the league... It was the fourth straight win for ECU this year, the best four-game run since the 2004 season in which the Tigers won four consecutive contests en route to a 6-4 campaign. Eastern New Mexico The Greyhounds dropped a 43-40 heartbreaker last week, in their Lone Star Conference North finale at Northeastern State. For the sixth time in the last seven games, Eastern rushed for at least 100 yards, while Wesley Wood threw 42 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Wood has now thrown 69 consecutive passes without an interception. The contest also marked the Hounds’ first overtime game since October 6, 2007 against Angelo State and the first time ENMU blocked two kicks in a game since August 29, 2009 at Colorado State-Pueblo. Eastern will close out the 2010 season this Saturday, with a LSC Crossover game at Tarleton State.

Incarnate Word While Incarnate Word lost its fourth consecutive game and while the margin was significant at Tarleton State, there was a difference. For the first time this year UIW led at the half--17-14. And for the first time in those four losses the Cardinals were not hopelessly behind after the first quarter--it was tied at 7-7. There were some bizarre happenings. Both team allowed kickoffs to fall to the turf to be covered by the other team. Incarnate Word was a perfect 3-3 on fourth down tries including two fake field goals. The first was called and holder Dominic Hamilton flipped the ball over his shoulder to kicker Thomas Rebold who ran for a first down at the TSU nine. On the same series on fourth and 5 Hamilton misheard the play call and thought it was another ‘flip’ play. When he mishandled the snap he picked up the ball and ran for the tying TD. Sophomore running back Trent Rios had a severly sprained ankle from the previous game and was not scheduled to play but then was listed as gametime and then started. He led all players in all-purpose yards with 167 including 85 rushing on 18 carries (no yards lost), 26 yards on three catches and 56 yards on two kickoff returns.

Midwestern State Midwestern State lost to Texas A&M-Kingsville for the first time since 2004... MSU is 7-0 against opponents with losing ledgers... The Mustangs dropped to 7-27 against teams ranked in the AFCA Top 25 since joining NCAA Division II in 1997... Midwestern is 1-13 versus ranked opposition on the road and 0-9 against teams ranked in the Top 5... The LSC’s top rushing team was held under 100 yards for the second time this season... MSU was limited to less than 100 passing yards with 75 for the first time since throwing for 73 yards against Abilene Christian on Nov. 8, 2008... Northeastern State Northeastern State tied for the Lone Star North title with a thrilling 43-40 overtime win over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. The RiverHawks improved to 6-4 overall, 6-3 in the LSC and 5-1 in North Division play. It is the first divisional crown for the RiverHawks since 2007 when five teams shared the championship. Kenny Davis tied a 40-year-old school record with five touchdown passes and the junior quarterback also ran for another score. He now shares the record with Roy Burk who had a 5-TD performance on Oct. 31, 1970. Trey McVay caught 12 passes for 175 yards and 3 TDs. The six wins is the most for a Northeastern State team since 2000 and it has assured itself of a non-losing season for the first time since a 5-5 record in 2001. The RiverHawks take on Midwestern State at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wichita Falls. A win may be enough for the team to qualify for the Kanza Bowl as the LSC representative in December.

Southeastern Oklahoma Lost to Angelo State, 40-33… six of SE’s last seven games have been decided by seven points or less… Baylen Laury turned in his sixth 100-plus yard rushing performance of the season, tying him with UCO’s Josh Birmingham for the most this season… since missing the SWOSU game, he has had four-straight 100 yard outing, including the leagues best rushing day with 222 yards against ECU… Laury now has 1,137 yards on the season which is the second best rushing season in the SE record book… it was the seventh 1,000-yard season in school history and the first since 2002… Laury also moved into second on SE’s career rushing yardage list with 2,538 yards, passing Scott Martin who held second with 2,401 and he now trails Earnest Hunter by 369 yards with one game remaining in his career.

The victory over UCO was SWOSU’s first since 2006 and could not have come at a better time according to head coach Dan Cocannouer who had more than 75 high school recruits in attendance.

Texas A&M-Kingsville

first downs 26-13. The win evened up the overall series at 6-6. Midwestern had been the only team to hold a winning record against the Javelinas with at least 10 games played. Double Digit Wins The Javelinas are going for their 10th win of the season this week when they take on Southeastern Oklahoma. The Hoggies have won at least 10 games in a season on 15 occasions. The first double digit victory season came in 1959 when the team went 12-1 en route to winning their first NAIA National Championship. The last time they recorded at least 10 wins came in 2003 when they went 11-2, won the Lone Star Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division II Semifinals. Wonderful Woodson Since moving into the starting lineup four weeks ago, sophomore running back Jonathon Woodson has been playing like an All-American. A week after earning LSC South Division Offensive Player of the Week honors, he gained 199 all-purpose yards in the team’s win over Midwestern State. He picked up 96 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. As a receiver, he caught a career high nine passes for 61 yards. He also added two kick returns for 42 yards. Since taking over the starting role Woodson is averaging 101.5 rushing yards, 42.0 receiving yards and another 54.3 kick return yards. He has moved into fourth place in the conference with 118.6 yards per game. Getting Defensive The Javelina defense has been consistently great this year and Saturday was no exception as they held an offense that came in averaging 37.0 points, 215.2 yards rushing and 226.1 yards passing per game to seven points, 86 yards rushing and 75 yards passing. Midwestern State became the sixth opponent this year to score one touchdown or less against the Javelinas. It was the eighth time this season the Hogs have held an opponent under 100 yards rushing and the third time they held an opponent under 100 yards passing. The Javelina rushing defense has been especially good this year and has been ranked first in the nation for the majority of the season. They are giving up only 2.1 yards per carry and three total touchdowns on the ground for the season.

West Texas A&M HARRIS TOSSES FOUR TDS - Taylor Harris’ four passing touchdowns against Abilene Christian marked the fourth time this season that he has thrown for four or more TDs in a game. MULTIPLE TD RECEPTIONS – With Tyson Williams and Brittan Golden (Jr-2L, Denver City, Texas) each catching a pair of touchdown passes against Abilene Christian, it marked the first time this season that two WT receivers have caught multiple TD passes in the same game. BUFFS MOVE THE BALL ON ‘CATS – In racking up 484 yards total offense against second-ranked Abilene Christian, the Buffaloes passed for 446 yards, while also converting 8-of-16 third down conversions (50.0 percent). Stopping the Streak The Javelinas finally came out on the positive end of things when playing Midwestern State with their 27-7 win on Saturday night. Prior to that game, the Hoggies had lost the previous five games against the Mustangs. The Hogs used a dominating performance on offense and defense to notch the victory. They outgained the Mustangs, 358-161 and doubled the total number of
