THIS WEEK IN W&J FOOTBALL HISTORY 100 YEARS AGO - 1917
After winning five in a row, including a 7-0 win over Penn State, W&J had now lost three straight (Pitt, WVU, Notre Dame). Another strong team lied ahead in a Thanksgiving Day tilt in Richmond, Va., against Washington & Lee, who was in its 13th winning season in a row. Scrubby McCreight scored two fourthquarter touchdowns and Pete Henry starred on defense and blocked a punt to give the Red & Black a 14-0 win. The most important thing to come out of that win, however, was, when referring to the W&J team, a Richmond writer dubbed the visitors, ‘The Presidents,’ a nickname which has stuck around for a century.
25 YEARS AGO - 1992
W&J was dealt its first loss of the season in its ninth game of 1992, a 47-28 defeat at Ithaca to close out the regular season. The 47 points allowed by the Red & Black nearly tripled the offensive output of any other opponent that season, as the Presidents rebounded in the postseason to make their first of two Stagg Bowl appearances in three years.
10 YEARS AGO - 2007
After defeating Waynesburg by a tight 22-21 margin the week before, No. 7 W&J traveled to Crestview Hills, Ky. to take on Thomas More for the third alltime meeting between the two squads. The Saints were no match for the Presidents that day as W&J rolled to a 42-0 win, clinching the 2007 PAC title. Curt Jones rushed for 153 yards and two TDs and John Fahey returned an interception 35 yards 19 seconds after Jones’ final plunge to cap the scoring with 1:05 left in the third quarter. Bobby Swallow completed 20-of-28 passes for 204 yards and two TDs, including one each to Ryan Church and Craig Besong in the win. David Gitlitz again led the defense with eight tackles and 3.0 TFLs as part of W&J’s 10 TFLs on the day. The Presidents also picked off three passes.

GIVE THANKS: The Presidents boast an overall record of 35-10 (.778) in November under Mike Sirianni. CHASING A RECORD: Sirianni enters play on Saturday with 136 career victories, one shy of tying former W&J head coach John Luckhardt (1982-98) atop the career wins list for the Presidents. BALL SECURITY: Since Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 29-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .906. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (behind Jake Wieneke of FCS South Dakota State in both). He currently sits at 251 receptions, 4,193 yards and 49 TDs in 40 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and tied for 12th in Division III history. Against Bethany earlier this season, he became just the 22nd wide receiver in the level’s history to top 4,000 yards. He needs 69 yards to become the PAC’s all-time yardage leader and 19 receptions to move atop the W&J career catches list. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players and 11th among all divisions with 376 career total tackles. His 212 solo tackles are second in D-III and ninth across the four levels of NCAA football. Murgo has reached double digits in stops five times this season (23 overall), with each one in 2017 netting 11 tackles.

HANG ON: W&J won the time of possession battle on Saturday for a third consecutive game, marking the first time that has happened since 2013 (Thomas More - Westminster - Saint Vincent). HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 732 games in its 125-year history (732-389-40), third behind Mount Union (777) and Wittenberg (762) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (698) and Wabash (678) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 22nd all-time, with Michigan ranking first at 940 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 15 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. The AFCA ranking is the first time W&J has entered the top 10 since 2009. W&J also shows up at fourth on the initial NCAA Regional Rankings of the season. 34 AND COUNTING: W&J now boasts 34 consecutive winning seasons as a football program. The Presidents’ 34 winning seasons rank fourth among all divisions of NCAA football behind Linfield (62), Florida State (40) and Mount Union (39). The last time W&J did not post a winning record was 1983 (3-5-1). **Graphic depicts entering season**
USE THE FORCE, LUKE: Senior safety Luke Merhaut led the Presidents with 10 tackles on Saturday at Saint Vincent, marking the fifth time in his career he reached double figures. The senior, who began his career as a wide receiver, also went over 200 tackles for his career as well and now sits at 202. O’SHEA CAN YOU SEE: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson is second in the PAC with four interceptions on the season, while his 0.6 INTs per game ranks 33rd in Division III. The senior, who tops the league with 14 passes defended, now has an interception in three-straight games and has doubled his career picks total entering the season (4; two each in 2015 and 2016). GIVE ME THAT: W&J’s 16 interceptions through eight games top the PAC by six and are tied for the 10th-most in Division III this season. The 16picks have already surpassed last season’s total of 11 in 11 games. 16 INTs are the most in a regular season since 2009 when the Presidents snagged 17 passes. W&J picked off 21 passes in 2014, but eight of those were in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at Wittenberg. W&J has an interception in seven games this season and multiple picks in five of eight contests. The Presidents +8 turnover margin is tied at the front of the PAC. POUND THE ROCK: W&J outgained its opponent on the ground for the seventh time in eight games this season last week. Sophomore RB Jordan West, in his first extended action since Week Three vs Thomas More, led all players with 26 carries and 90 net yards, while freshman RB EJ Thompson posted 75 yards, his fourth time over 60 this season.
@wjathletics
W&J VS. THE PAC: W&J holds a 341-13910 (.706) winning percentage against current football-playing members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Washington & Jefferson has claimed a record 24 PAC Championships throughout the history of the league. Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J is 78-15 (.839) in conference games.
