THE SERIES: Washington & Jefferson and Frostburg State have met six times on the gridiron, with the Presidents emerging victorious in all of those prior match-ups. The first two times the squads met was 1964-65 with W&J winning by 6-0 and 34-18 scores. The third meeting was in the 1993 playoffs, a 28-7 W&J win in Maryland. The teams played three consecutive years in 2008-10, with W&J winning by 49-21, 34-12 and 21-6 scores, giving Mike Sirianni a 3-0 record against the Bobcats. W&J is 3-0 at home.
THE COACHES: Mike Sirianni (Mount Union, ’94) owns a 139-30 (.822) record at W&J in his 15th season as head coach. Two weeks ago, Sirianni became the W&J career coaching wins leader. The seven-time PAC Coach of the Year (after winning the award with Case Western Reserve’s Greg Debeljak this year) and two-time South Region Coach of the Year (2004, 2012) is seventh among all active NCAA coaches in winning percentage (minimum of 10 years). The Presidents have made 12 postseason appearances under Sirianni, highlighted by NCAA quarterfinal finishes in 2004 and 2008. DeLane Fitzgerald (James Madison, ’99) is in his fourth season as the 13th head coach in Frostburg State’s history and holds a record of 30-12 (.714) with the Bobcats and an overall record of 54-42 (.563) in nine years between FSU and Southern Virginia. He also has stints at NAIA-Bethel (Tenn.) as the offensive coordinator and has stops at James Madison and Tennessee-Martin to his credit.

GIVE THANKS: The Presidents boast an overall record of 38-10 (.792) in November under Mike Sirianni. BUILD AND MAINTAIN: One of the things that has allowed Sirianni to amass so many victories is that his teams are extremely good at winning games in which they’ve had a lead at halftime, boasting a 109-3 record in those contests, a whopping .973 winning percentage. BALL SECURITY: Since Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 30-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .909. HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: W&J has won 30-straight games at Cameron Stadium, with the last loss coming on Sept. 8, 2012, a 28-24 setback against St. John Fisher. It is the longest active streak in all of NCAA football. Mary Hardin-Baylor is second at 23 games, while Alabama and Sam Houston State are tied for third at 19. Indiana (Pa.), San Diego and Southern Cal are tied for fifth with 16 and James Madison, Monmouth (Ill.) and Penn State round out the top 10 tied with 14 apiece. STREAKING: W&J has won 15-straight games, with its last loss coming on Oct. 22, 2016, a 16-10 setback at Westminster. The 15-game winning streak is tied for the third longest in Division III right now, with Mary Hardin-Baylor leading at 26 games, Berry second at 16 and the Presidents tied with Delaware Valley for third. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions among active players in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (behind Jake Wieneke of FCS South Dakota State in both). He currently sits at 281 receptions, 4,672 yards and 53 TDs in 43 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and tied for tied for ninth in Division III history. His 4,672 receiving yards are the seventh most in Division III history, and with 25 yards he will break into the all-time top five. GAGLIARDI CONTENDER: This week Zubik was named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2017 Gagliardi Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in Division III. Fans can vote at: http://www.d3football.com/notables/2017/11/ gagliardi-voting ROWSE-ING RETURN: Senior QB Alex Rowse returned to the W&J lineup last week after missing the previous three games with an injury. He threw 61 passes, completing 36, and three touchdowns, including two to Zubik. His 391 yards were the second most of his career and the most by a quarterback in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. MARRA-VELOUS: Senior DE Tom Marra registered a career-best 4.0 sacks on Saturday against Johns Hopkins, including a pair on the Blue Jays’ final drive with under a minute to go. His 4 sacks were double any other player in the playoffs last weekend. For the season, his 20.0 TFL and 9.0 sacks lead the PAC. His 9.0 sacks are the most for a President since Jon Turner had 11.5 in 2014, while his 20 TFL are the most since at least 2001. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players and 11th among all divisions with 396 career total tackles. His 221 solo tackles are second in D-III and 10th across the four levels of NCAA football. Murgo has reached double digits in stops five times this season (23 overall), with each one in 2017 netting 11 tackles.

GIVE ME THAT: W&J’s 20 interceptions top the PAC and rank 10th in the country. The Presidents’ 30 turnovers gained are seventh in the nation, while W&J’s 1.0 turnover margin is 20th in the country. HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 735 games in its 126-year history (735-389-40), third behind Mount Union (780) and Wittenberg (764) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (699) and Wabash (680) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 22nd all-time, with Michigan ranking first at 943 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 14 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. The AFCA ranking is the first time W&J has entered the top 10 since 2009. A PERFECT STORM: W&J finished the regular season undefeated for the 13th time in the storied history of the program. The 11 wins are the 18th the Presidents have reached double digits, while just six teams have won 11 games (1992-94, 2001, 2004, 2008), including the schoolrecord 12 by the 2004 squad. CREAM OF THE CROP: W&J has won 25 PAC titles in program history, far and away the most in league history and more than the next three teams combined (John Carroll and Thomas More are tied for second at eight apiece, while Carnegie Mellon has seven titles). IT’S BEEN A WHILE: The last time an NCAA Second Round playoff game or later took place at Cameron Stadium was 2004 when the Presidents hosted three rounds in Washington, eventually falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor in the national quarterfinals. A win would put W&J in the quarterfinals for the 10th time, and first since 2008. ALL-PAC PERFORMERS: W&J placed 15 on the All-PAC teams which were released last week, the fourth-most in the league behind Carnegie Mellon (18) and Westminster and Case Western Reserve (17). The Presidents placed six members on the First Team, two offensive and four defensive, the third time since 2003 that W&J has had more defensive First Team members than offensive (2003, 2009). First Team: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson, senior DE Tom Marra, senior S Luke Merhaut, senior LB Nick Murgo, junior OL Andrew Reo, senior WR Jesse Zubik. Second Team: Senior OL Matt Babbit. Honorable Mention: Junior OL Phillip Bobich, senior TE Jake Cullen, senior WR Cody Hearst, senior DE Freddie McKissick, sophomore DL Jeffrey Oxner, junior LB Zac Quattrone, senior QB Alex Rowse, junior S Zach Royba. Additionally, senior WR Benjamin Waugh earned a spot on the league’s new Sportsmanship Team.
O’SHEA CAN YOU SEE: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson added his seventh interception of the season against Johns Hopkins, which places him tied for fourth on the W&J singleseason list. It also gives him 11 career picks, the sixth most in program history. His seven INTs this year are seventh in Division III.

HAVE A (DALTON) DAY: After posting only 20 career tackles in his first three seasons, senior LB Dalton Day has 54 tackles this season, thanks in part to back-to-back 16 tackle performances the last two weeks. He has catapulted all the way to being the fourth-leading tackle for the Presidents this season, as his 16 tackles against Johns Hopkins were tied for the most in an NCAA playoff game last week.
