THE COACHES: Mike Sirianni (Mount Union, ’94) owns a 137-30 (.820) record at W&J in his 15th season as head coach. His win total is currently tied atop the W&J list with John Luckhardt (1982-98). The six-time PAC Coach of the Year and two-time South Region Coach of the Year (2004, 2012) is seventh among all active NCAA coaches in winning percentage (minimum of 10 years). The Presidents have made 12 postseason appearances under Sirianni, highlighted by NCAA quarterfinal finishes in 2004 and 2008. Chris Smithley (Waynesburg, ’09) is in his first season as the interim head coach at his alma mater after serving as the offensive coordinator in 2016. Smithley, who has a career 2-7 (.222) record, previously spent four years on the defensive staff at W&J.

THIS WEEK IN W&J FOOTBALL HISTORY 100 YEARS AGO - 1917

A 10th game was added to the 1917 season when W&J traveled to Toledo for a post-season game against Camp Sherman, a military unit. The Sherman Stars featured many former college names, but the newly-named Presidents’ defense was impenetrable in a 7-0 victory.

25 YEARS AGO - 1992

W&J rebounded from a frustrating loss to Ithaca to close out the regular season by dealing Lycoming a 33-0 defeat in the first round of the 1992 playoffs. The Presidents would win three playoff games that season before falling in Stagg Bowl XX to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 16-12.

10 YEARS AGO - 2007

Offense, offense, offense. Bobby Swallow threw six touchdown passes to five different receivers as the two teams combined for 1,241 yards and 59 first downs in a 77-39 W&J win against Bethany. The score was 28-26 at halftime, but the Presidents erupted for 35 points in the third quarter to pull away. The first six drives of the day ended up in touchdowns, and the Presidents found the end zone in 11 of 15 possessions on the day, including seven-straight to start the second half. Swallow completed 23-of-31 passes for 296 yards, including nine for 136 and a score to David Ravida. Ryan Church caught three passes -- two for touchdowns -- as W&J used 640 yards of offense to light up the scoreboard. Kevin Mathews rushed 19 times for 208 yards and three touchdowns, plus caught four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in the win. Curt Jones tallied 81 yards on eight carries and a score as part of 344 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground for the Red & Black. Chris Kessler led the team with nine tackles plus a TFL, while W&J recovered two fumbles and intercepted two more passes.

GIVE THANKS: The Presidents boast an overall record of 36-10 (.783) in November under Mike Sirianni. CLAIM TO THE TOP: Sirianni enters play on Saturday with 137 career victories, tied with former W&J head coach John Luckhardt (1982-98) atop the career wins list for the Presidents. BALL SECURITY: Since Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 29-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .906. HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: W&J has won 28-straight games at Cameron Stadium, dating back to Sept. 8, 2012. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (behind Jake Wieneke of FCS South Dakota State in both). He currently sits at 259 receptions, 4,308 yards and 49 TDs in 41 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and tied for 12th in Division III history. Against Bethany earlier this season, he became just the 22nd wide receiver in the level’s history to top 4,000 yards and is now just the 10th to reach 4,300. Against Geneva, he became the PAC’s all-time yardage leader and is 11 receptions from topping the W&J career catches list. RUN WEST: Sophomore RB Jordan West matched his season and career high on Saturday with 154 yards against Geneva. He did so on 36 carries, his most, and the largest total by a President since Ryan Ruffing carried 38 times against Carnegie Mellon on Sept. 19, 2015. He also regained the team lead for rushing yards in the process and went over 500 yards on the season, accumulating 505 yards on 118 attempts with 8 touchdowns. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players and 11th among all divisions with 385 career total tackles. His 216 solo tackles are second in D-III and ninth across the four levels of NCAA football. Murgo has reached double digits in stops five times this season (23 overall), with each one in 2017 netting 11 tackles. O’SHEA CAN YOU SEE: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson is second in the PAC with four interceptions on the season, while his 0.5 INTs per game ranks 45th in Division III. The senior, who tops the league with 14 passes defended, is 12th among all current Division III players with 36 career passes defended and 11th at 1.24 passes defended per game, which is also 17th among all divisions. GIVE ME THAT: W&J’s 16 interceptions top the PAC and rank 13th in the country. The Presidents’ 25 turnovers gained are also 13th in the nation, while W&J’s 1.11 turnover margin is 18th in the country. MARRA-VELOUS: Senior DE Tom Marra is second in the conference with 15.0 tackles for loss this season, while his 1.7 per game are 27th in Division III. The senior now has back-to-back years of 15.0 TFLs, and 35.5 in three seasons.

HANG ON: After facing a significant disparity on time of possession over the first five games of the season, W&J has held the advantage in TOP for four-straight games now. It marks the first time W&J has held the TOP edge in four consecutive games since the opening four weeks of 2012. HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 733 games in its 126-year history (733-389-40), third behind Mount Union (778) and Wittenberg (763) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (699) and Wabash (679) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 22nd all-time, with Michigan ranking first at 940 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 15 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. The AFCA ranking is the first time W&J has entered the top 10 since 2009. W&J also shows up at fourth on the second NCAA Regional Rankings of the season, and final public rankings. A PERFECT STORM: A win on Saturday would give W&J an undefeated regular season for the 13th time in the storied history of the program, while the most recent 10-0 campaign came in 2007. 10 W&J teams of the past have won 10-or-more straight games in-season with 2007, 2006, 1995, 1990, 1987 and 1921 posting 10 wins; 2001, 1993, 1990 winning 11 straight and 2004 posting 12 consecutive victories. WIN AND IN: A victory on Saturday would give W&J the 25th PAC title in program history, far and away the most in league history (John Carroll and Thomas More are tied for second at eight apiece). It would also punch the Presidents’ ticket to the NCAA Division III Championship for the 25th time, the second most appearances behind only Mount Union (28).

W&J VS. THE PAC: W&J holds a 342-13910 (.707) winning percentage against current football-playing members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Washington & Jefferson has claimed a record 24 PAC Championships throughout the history of the league. Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J is 79-15 (.840) in conference games.
