Stannington First School Newsletter 1 February 2013

Dear Parents and Carers There is a lot happening in school this half term; the Early Years children are learning about shops and shopping – they have a fantastic role play area consisting of a pet shop and a bakers shop. Swifts are learning about the Great Fire of London and Owls are learning about World War 2. Snowy Weather Thank goodness the snow has gone! I hope that it doesn’t reappear as it is very disruptive. I was pleased that we were able to keep the school open throughout the week, one of the few schools in the area. Thank You A big ‘Thank You’ to Brent Kilmurray, Simon Brown, Paul Fearon and Shaun Myerscough who came and cleared the car park of snow last week. All the staff appreciated it and it ensured that there were less cars parked out on the road. Basic Skills Mark Last week we were awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark – this award recognises the excellent work that is going on in the school in Maths, English and I.C.T. Anti-Bullying Award We are proud of the behaviour of the children in school. During the recent Ofsted inspection the inspectors commented that whilst they were in school they saw a lot of excellent behaviour during lessons and when walking around the school. This week we have been awarded the Anti-Bullying Award which identifies the work that we have done to ensure that bullying is something that rarely occurs in Stannington. Soup Kitchen and Pudding Club Just a reminder that Soup and Puddings are available to all children who bring packed lunches at a cost of 60p per bowl. The next Soup Kitchen will be Wednesday 6th February. There is no need to pre-book, just send payment into the office. Come Dine with Us We are introducing Parent Lunches, where once a month parents and guardians can join their child for lunch. This month will be the turn for Owls parents to come into school and try our catering. A meal costs £2.65 and numbers are restricted to one adult per child.

Volunteers for Swimming If you have a spare couple of hours on Friday mornings, please volunteer to assist with swimming! The children in Owls are making such good progress and would love to show you their skills… and I’m sure that the current volunteers would welcome a week off as they have been coming every week since September. Volunteers for After School Club Thank you very much to Kelly Fearon for offering to help in After School Club during the inclement weather. If anyone else is interested in helping, please see Mrs Hancock. Late Arrivals There are an increasing number of children who are coming to school late. The bell is rung at 8.55 a.m. and lessons start soon after. If your child is late they are missing vital learning and also disrupting the learning of the other children in the class. Shrove Tuesday in Church and 200 Club As you are aware, in 2009 the Governors and parents of the school decided to become a school that is affiliated to St Marys Church, Stannington. This was to ensure that the school and the church worked closely together for the benefit of all the children at the school. On Shrove Tuesday, we have been invited to the Shrove Tuesday celebration in church. This will take place straight after school in the church and the members of the church will be serving pancakes for us all to eat – they are extremely delicious and well worth going for!! The church has also opened up their 100 Club for us to join. The school benefits from this financially – last year we received over £250 from the proceeds of the club. This year unfortunately we only have 3 members from the school community. If you would like to join now it is still possible and the cost will be reduced to £8.00 for the year. What do you get? – there is a draw once a month with the first prize being £20 and then two more prizes of £10, you are not limited to one number either – you can have as many numbers as you like. If you would like to join club, please see Angela as soon as possible for a form. Lost Property We have a lot of lost property in school - if you would like to come and have a look through the box or on the coat pegs, please do so before or after school – it will be easier for you then as the children’s coats aren’t on the pegs. Please can you ensure that all your child’s clothes, including forest school clothes, are named so the clothes can easily be reunited with their owners. We also have 2 large red plastic serving/display plates that need to be reunited with their owner. These were brought into school at Christmas, possibly with party food. Please contact Mrs Harker in the office if these belong to you. School Clothes If your child has been changed into school underwear and clothes, please can you return them, washed, as soon as possible. We have run out of changes of underwear (the school bought 20 pairs of knickers and underpants at the start of the year!) Thanks for your help in this.

Homework and reading books Please can you regularly check your child’s bookbag for homework or reading books. Bags2School – Thursday 28th March 2013 To raise funds for the PTA we have booked a Bags2School day on Thursday 28th March. Bags2School pays 50p per kilo, or if we are incredibly lucky, £500 per tonne of clothes donated. You will be provided with bags to bring in any donations. Items can include clothing, sheets, blankets, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts or handbags. Kind Regards Helen Stokoe Head Teacher
