I hope that you all had a lovely break over Easter, the children all have had a good holiday and are ready for the last term of the year. This will be a busy term with lots of different activities happening to ensure that all the children have happy memories of their time at Stannington First School.

Spelling & tables tests We need your help! Spellings and times tables form the foundations of learning. Please encourage and support your child to learn both their spellings and tables. The children will be given spellings that they have been working on throughout the week, please help them to learn them. The children will be re-tested on the spellings and tables if they don’t get 7/10 or more. Again your help is vital to ensure that your child makes good to outstanding progress in reading. We follow a reading programme (with some supplementary reading books) which enables our children to have a broad vocabulary, comprehension and recognition, where they are confident with their reading ability and also very importantly enjoy the books they are reading. Please take 5-10 minutes on an evening to listen to or read with your child (longer for Owls children) and then write in the home/school diary. All your time and effort will compliment the work done in school to ensure that your child makes the maximum amount of progress – you are not doing our job, you are ensuring that your child succeeds whilst at SFS and beyond!

Stannington First School Newsletter Swimming Please ensure that your child is in school on time on Friday mornings. It is extremely disruptive when children are arriving after registration. Swimming is an important life skill for all children. Our children are fortunate to receive a one hours lessons. Please make sure they are in school and fully equipped for the lessons.

P.E. A growing number of children are coming to school without their PE kits. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school to enable them to fully participate in the curriculum. This term the children will be doing football and orienteering.

School meals & School Money Please ensure that you have credit on your School Money account for meals. Meals should be paid in advance, rather than in arrears.

Gardening club Mrs Brown needs 12 children to help with the garden. The gardening club will run on Wednesdays after school, 3.15-4.15pm at a cost of £4.40. Please speak to Mrs Hancock or Mrs Harker to book a place.

Warm weather Please remember to apply sun cream to your child when the weather is warm.

Greggs Children’s Cancer Run Mr T is organising a team to run on Sunday 17th May. If you would like to be part of the team (parents and children), please pick up an application form from the office.

Bottle greenhouse Mr T has nearly finished the bottle greenhouse; he still needs more bottles please.
