Utah Baseball Continues at Home for UC Riverside
The Utah baseball team goes out of conference this week to host UC Riverside in a threegame series beginning on Thursday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m. MT. Games continue on Friday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m. MT and Saturday, May 6, at 11:30 a.m. MT. All three games will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. Utah continues its season-long player card promotion with DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., on Thursday, Hunter Rodriguez and Conner McNally on Friday and Zack Moeller on Saturday. Thursday is Star Wars Day and the first 250 kids in attendance will receive a Star Wars character mask of their choice. Saturday will feature kids games on the concourse pregame. Utah (19-19, 9-12 Pac-12) ranks second in the Pac-12 with a .289 batting average. The Utes are second in the league in runs scored (242), RBI (216) and on-base percentage (.380) while ranking third in hits (388). Utah is fourth in the league in slugging percentage (.398) and walks (170). The Utes rank sixth in the Pac-12 in earned run average (3.92). Utah leads the league in fewest home runs allowed (12) and pickoffs (11). Dallas Carroll and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., are two of the best hitters in the league. Carroll is second in the Pac-12 in batting average (.382) and third in on-base percentage (.462) and slugging percentage (.599). Keirsey is eighth in the conference in batting average (.353) and ranks second in hits (60) and hits per game (1.58). Jayson Rose is seventh in the Pac-12 with 58 strikeouts. He has 232 career strikeouts and needs four K’s to tie the Utah career record for strikeouts, held by Jason Price (236, 2003-06). UC Riverside is 16-23 overall and 4-11 in the Big West Conference. The Highlanders recently won two of three against UC Santa Barbara, and play Fresno State on Wednesday before playing the Utes.
Infield
• At third base, senior Dallas Carroll ranks in the top five in the league in multiple categories. He is second in batting average (.382) and third in on-base percentage (.462) and slugging percentage (.599). Carroll is third in the Pac-12 in total bases (91), fourth in hits per game (1.53), fifth in hits (58) and RBI (41), tied for fifth in doubles (14) and tied for seventh in home runs (5). Carroll is tied for 10th in the league in stolen bases (7-of-8). Carroll is tied for second on the team with two triples and is also second with 29 runs scored. He is third on the team with 23 walks. He leads Utah with 10 multiple-RBI games and is second on the team with 19 multiple-hit games. • Carroll went 2-for-4 in game three against Washington. • Carroll is in his fourth season starting at third base (175 starts) and also has a redshirt year under his belt. He was a 2016 All-Pac-12 player. • Senior Hunter Simmons, who has started every game at first base, is hitting .311 and is tied for ninth in the Pac-12 (second on the team) with 29 RBI. He is also second on the team (tied for eighth in the Pac-12) with 22 walks and is third on the team with a .404 on-base percentage. Simmons is tied for second on the team with three home runs. He is 2-for-3 in stolen bases, has a .405 slugging percentage and five doubles with 23 runs scored. Simmons’ seven multiple RBI games is tied for second on the team. • Simmons is on a seven-game hitting streak and has had a hit in nine of Utah’s last 10 games. • Simmons earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after hitting .569 (9-for-16) with six RBI against Nebraska and Ohio State. • Simmons has 153 starts (170 games) over four seasons. • Freshman Oliver Dunn has started all but two games at second base. He is hitting .255 with 19 RBI, 17 walks, five doubles and a triple. He has scored 28 runs (third on the team) and has two stolen bases. • Senior Ellis Kelly has started in 25 games at shortstop, including the last 17 games. He is third on the team with a .333 batting average and a .433 slugging percentage. Kelly has five doubles, two triples, 15 RBI, one stolen base and has scored 16 runs. He has made just one error in 99 chances.

2017 Utah Baseball • Kelly went 2-for-4 in game three of the series against Washington State. • Kelly, a JC transfer, has started 44 games at short over the last two seasons. • Junior Kyle Hoffman, who has started 13 games at short and one game at second (19 games total), is hitting .222 with three doubles, a triple, four RBI and 12 runs scored. He has a .364 on-base percentage. • Hoffman, in his third season at Utah, has played in 44 games with 23 career starts. • Utility player junior Wade Gulden has started 26 games at designated hitter with appearances in 34 games. He is hitting .240 with three home runs (tied for second on the team), a double, 13 RBI, 18 runs scored and a stolen base. • Gulden has played in 97 games in his threeyear career with 57 starts between the infield, outfield and DH. • Utility redshirt freshman Connor McNally has played in 17 games with two starts (one at DH, one at 2B). • Sophomore DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center and senior Josh Rose in right have started every game. Sophomore Chandler Anderson and freshman Dominic Foscalina have both started in left field. • Keirsey is second in the Pac-12 in hits (60) and hits per game (1.58) while ranking eighth in batting average (.353). He is tied for second in the conference in triples (four), tied for sixth in runs scored (37), seventh in total bases (85) and tied for 10th in stolen bases (7-of-12). Keirsey is second on the team with a .500 slugging percentage and a .416 on-base percentage and tied for second with three home runs. He is third on the team with 27 RBI and eight doubles. Keirsey also has 16 walks. He leads Utah with 20 multiple-hit games. • Keirsey went 2-for-5 in game three against Washington State. • Keirsey was All-Pac-12, a Freshman All-American and member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team last season. • Rose is hitting .212. • Sophomore Zack Moeller has played in 36 games with 33 starts at catcher (plus one at DH). He is hitting .256 on the year and is tied for second on the team with three home runs. Moeller has a .397 slugging percentage, 19 RBI, 20 runs scored, six doubles and a triple. He is tied for the league lead in times hit by pitch (11). Moeller has been involved in three pickoffs, which is tied for second in the conference, and has caught eight runners stealing (tied for fourth in the league). • Moeller has had a hit in eight of his last nine games. • Moeller started part time last year at catcher. • Freshman Alex Isola has played in nine games with five starts at catcher. He is hitting .222 with four RBI and a double. • Senior Max Schuman has played in 16 games with four starts at designated hitter. He has one relief appearance at catcher. Schuman is hitting .160 with four RBI, two doubles and two walks. • Schuman has experience behind the plate but has started 63 games at designated hitter in his career and played in 147 total games. • Junior Jayson Rose leads Utah and is seventh in the Pac-12 with 58 strikeouts. He is tied for ninth in the Pac-12 with 68 innings pitched and is tied for sixth in the league with two pickoffs. • Junior Josh Lapiana is 3-5 on the year with a 4.30 ERA and has 43 strikeouts. He has pitched 58 2/3 innings. • Lapiana threw a complete game in the gamethree win over then-seventh-ranked Arizona, holding the nation’s third-ranked offense to two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. • Freshman Jacob Rebar has a 5.52 ERA, 3-4 record, one save, 32 strikeouts over 29 1/3 innings and is tied for the team lead (and tied for second in the Pac-12) with three pickoffs. He is holding opponents to a .221 batting average. Rebar has four starts and nine relief appearances. • Rebar has pitched six-straight scoreless innings.
