Utah Baseball Closes Regular Season at Home vs. ASU
The Utah baseball team closes out the regular season at home with a three-game series against Arizona State beginning on Friday, May 26, at 11:30 a.m. MT. The series continues on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, with all three games at 11:30 a.m. MT. All three games will be aired on the Pac-12 Network with Daron Sutton and Kevin Stocker on the call. Saturday is senior day, with eight seniors being honored: Max Schuman, Ellis Kelly, Hunter Simmons, Hunter Rodriguez, Josh Rose, Dylan Drachler, Dallas Carroll and manager Dustin Hughes. Utah continues its season-long baseball card promotion with Jake Portaro on Friday, Josh Rose on Saturday and Matt Poulin and Spencer Johnson on Sunday. Sunday will feature a ‘nine innings of winnings’ with various prizes given away throughout the game. Utah ranks third in the Pac-12 in on-base percentage (.374) and fourth in batting average (.286). The Utes are second in the league in RBI (262) and runs scored (291) while ranking fourth in total hits (483). On the mound, Utah is sixth in the conference with a 4.16 ERA. Utah leads the league in pickoffs (12) and is second in the conference in fewest home runs allowed (21). Dallas Carroll and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., are two of the best hitters in the league. Carroll is fourth in the league in batting average (.365), while ranking second in on-base percentage (.461) and slugging percentage (.577). Keirsey is third in the conference in hits per game (1.49) and ranks ninth in batting average (.335). He is tied for second in the conference with five triples. Jayson Rose is seventh in the Pac-12 with 76 strikeouts, and is tied for fourth in the league with seven victories (7-3). Arizona State is 23-29 on the season and 8-19 in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils have dropped five of their last seven games.
Infield
• At third base, senior Dallas Carroll ranks in the top five in the league in multiple categories. He is second in the league in on-base percentage (.461) and slugging percentage (.577) while ranking fourth in batting average (.365). Carroll is fourth in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.44) and is tied for eighth in total hits (69) and also ranks fourth in RBI (49). In addition, he is tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in walks (32), tied for sixth in home runs (7) and tied for seventh in the league in doubles (15). Carroll ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in total bases (109), tied for eighth in stolen bases (9-of11) and ninth in runs scored (41). He is the seventh-toughest player in the Pac-12 to strike out (once every 9.9 at-bats). Carroll is tied for second on the team with two triples. He leads the team with 12 multiple-RBI games and is second with 22 multiple-hit games. Carroll is hitting .407 (24-of-59) with runners in scoring position and .430 (40-of-93) with runners on base. • Carroll has had a hit in nine of his last 11 games. He had seven RBI in three games against UCLA, including a pair of three-run home runs in games one and two of the series. • Carroll is in his fourth season starting at third base (184 starts) and also has a redshirt year under his belt. He was a 2016 All-Pac-12 player and has a .309 career batting average. • Senior Hunter Simmons, who has started every game at first base, is hitting .311 and is second on the team with 32 RBI. He has a .392 on-base percentage, .395 slugging percentage and 26 walks, all third on the team. He is also tied for third on the team with three home runs. Simmons is 2-for-4 in stolen bases and has seven doubles with 27 runs scored. Simmons’ seven multiple RBI games is third on the team. • Simmons had the longest hitting streak on the team this season (13 games, April 20-May 14). • Simmons earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after hitting .569 (9-for-16) with six RBI against Nebraska and Ohio State. • Simmons has 163 starts (180 games) over four seasons. • Freshman Oliver Dunn has started all but two games at second base. He is hitting .239 with 19 RBI, 19 walks, six doubles and a triple. He has scored 29 runs (third on the team) and has two stolen bases.

2017 Utah Baseball • Senior Ellis Kelly has started in 35 games at shortstop, including the last 27 games. He has a .288 batting average and .360 slugging percentage. Kelly has five doubles, two triples (tied for second on the team), 19 RBI, one stolen base, six walks and has scored 19 runs. He is 4-of-7 with the bases loaded. • Kelly has had a hit in five of his last seven games. • Kelly, a JC transfer, has started 54 games at short over the last two seasons. • Junior Kyle Hoffman, who has started 13 games at short and one game at second (22 games total), is hitting .224 with three doubles, a triple, four RBI and 14 runs scored. He has a .387 on-base percentage. • Hoffman, in his third season at Utah, has played in 47 games with 23 career starts. • Utility player junior Wade Gulden has started 34 games at designated hitter (one outfield start) with appearances in 43 games. He is hitting .256 with four home runs (second on the team), a .403 slugging percentage, five doubles, 20 RBI, 20 walks, 23 runs scored and is 3-for-4 in stolen bases. • Gulden hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against USC in game three of the series. • Gulden has played in 106 games in his threeyear career with 66 starts between the infield, outfield and DH. • Utility redshirt freshman Conner McNally has played in 22 games with two starts (one at DH, one at 2B). McNally has a .421 on-base percentage, is hitting .214, is 2-for-3 in stolen bases and has scored five runs with four walks. He scored the game-tying run in game two against USC as a pinch runner.
Outfield
• Sophomore DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center, Josh Rose in right have started nearly every game in the outfield while sophomore Chandler Anderson and freshman Dominic Foscalina have both started in left field. • Keirsey is third in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.49) and tied for sixth in total hits (70) while ranking ninth in batting average (.335). He is tied for second in the league with five triples and is tied for eighth with nine stolen bases (9-of-14). Keirsey is 10th in the league in total bases (98). He is second on the team with 37 runs scored, a .469 slugging percentage and a .394 on-base percentage. He is third on the team with 30 RBI. Keirsey has three home runs and nine doubles along with 18 walks. He leads Utah with 23 multiple-hit games. Keirsey is hitting .400 (22-of-55) with runners in scoring position. • Keirsey was All-Pac-12, a Freshman All-American and member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team last season. • Rose is hitting .216. He is tied for seventh in the league in walks (30) and has a .350 onbase percentage. Rose is tied for second on the team with 11 doubles. He has 27 RBI, 23 runs scored, three home runs, a triple and is 2-for-4 in stolen bases. His 10 multiple RBI games is second on the team.
• Rose was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 honoree last year. He has played in 195 career games with 165 career starts. • Anderson is hitting .320 over 39 games with 33 starts (includes three starts at DH). He is the sixth-toughest player in the Pac-12 to strike out (once every 10.4 at bats). Anderson has 19 RBI, 26 runs scored, six doubles, a home run, 40 hits, 11 walks, a .387 on-base percentage and .392 slugging percentage and is 3-for-6 in stolen bases. • Anderson hit .308 (4-of-13) with an RBI against UCLA. • Anderson was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on May 15 after hitting .538 (7-of13) in a 3-0 week for Utah with multiple hits in each game, scoring five runs and driving in three runs. He hit his first career home run against BYU, and in game two against USC scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. • Foscalina has started 23 games with 20 outfield starts (32 games total). He is hitting .322 with 10 RBI, five doubles, 15 runs scored and a .378 slugging percentage. He has a .373 on-base percentage. • Against BYU, Foscalina entered midway through at DH and hit a double in the 13th inning to move the lead runner (and what would be the game-winning run) to third. He had a hit in his only at-bat against USC in game two of the series and has not played since.
Catcher
• Sophomore Zack Moeller has played in 46 games with 43 starts at catcher (plus one at DH). He is hitting .263 on the year and is tied for second on the team with 11 doubles. He also has three home runs with a .400 slugging percentage (fourth on the team) and .350 on-base percentage. He has three home runs, 25 RBI, 27 runs scored and one triple. He is tied for the league lead in times hit by pitch (12). Moeller has been involved in four pickoffs, which is second in the conference, and has caught 10 runners stealing (fourth in the league). • Moeller started part time last year at catcher and has started 61 games over the last two years (one at DH). • Freshman Alex Isola has played in 11 games with five starts at catcher. He is hitting .300 with four RBI, three walks and a double. • Isola scored the game-winning run in the 13th inning against BYU, beating out a one-out infield single in his only at-bat before scoring on a sacrifice fly. He had a hit in game three against UCLA in a pinch-hit appearance. • Senior Max Schuman has played in 20 games with five starts at designated hitter. He has one relief appearance at catcher as well as an outfield relief appearance. Schuman is hitting .133 with four RBI, two doubles and five walks. • Schuman has experience behind the plate but has started 64 games at designated hitter in his career and played in 151 total games.

2017 Utah Baseball Pitchers
• Junior Jayson Rose leads Utah and is seventh in the Pac-12 with 76 strikeouts. He is tied for fourth in the Pac-12 in wins (7-3) with a 3.66 ERA and has thrown 86 innings (eighth in the Pac-12). Rose is holding hitters to a .251 batting average. • Rose, a 2016 All-Pac-12 pick, holds the Utah career record for strikeouts (250) and the single-season record for strikeouts (106, 2016). • Sophomore Riley Ottesen is 4-4 with a 4.98 ERA and 61 strikeouts. He is seventh in the Pac-12 with 86 2/3 innings pitched and is tied for seventh in the league with two pickoffs. Ottesen also has one relief appearance, which resulted in a save. • Junior Josh Lapiana is 3-6 on the year with a 5.23 ERA and has 56 strikeouts as Utah’s Sunday starter.
