Utah Baseball Faces BYU
The Utah baseball team plays its second game of the season against BYU on Tuesday, April 18, before continuing Pac-12 play this weekend at Arizona. Tuesday’s game against BYU begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks with radio at ESPN 700. Activities will be on the concourse for Youth Night and the first 500 fans in attendance will be given stick flags. Fans wearing red will receive half price tickets. It is the second of three games Utah and BYU will play on the diamond this season. BYU won game one of the series, 11-6, back on March 28. The final game of the series is in Provo on Tuesday, May 9. The three-game series is worth three total points towards the Deseret First Dual rivalry series, now in its 10th season. Utah clinched the overall victory, 26-6, with wins in football, volleyball, women’s basketball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis, with just baseball remaining. Utah ranks third in the Pac-12 with a .286 batting average. The Utes are second in the league in runs scored (189) and RBI (170) while ranking fourth in slugging percentage (.397), hits (313), on-base percentage (.371) and triples (10, tied). On the mound, Utah is sixth in the conference with a .395 ERA, while leading the league in fewest home runs allowed (eight) and pickoffs (eight). Dallas Carroll ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in batting average (.389) and second in slugging percentage (.619) and on-base percentage (.466). He is third in the conference in hits per game (1.58). DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., is fifth in the league in hits per game (1.48) and is currently on a 10-game hitting streak. Jayson Rose is seventh in the conference with 49 strikeouts. BYU is 20-13 on the season and 9-3 in the West Coast Conference. The Cougars have won six of their last seven games.
Infield
• At third base, senior Dallas Carroll ranks in the top five in the league in multiple categories. He is fourth in batting average (.389), second in slugging percentage (.619) and on-base percentage (.466). Carroll is third in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.58) and tied for fourth in hits (49). He is tied for third in the league in doubles (13), fourth in total bases (78), sixth in RBI (30), is the seventh-toughest player to strike out (once in every 9.7 at bats) and ranks tied for eighth in stolen bases (six). Carroll
leads the Utes with four home runs and is tied for second on the team with two triples. He is third on the team with 17 walks. He leads Utah with eight multiple-RBI games and is tied for the team lead with 16 multiple-hit games. • Carroll hit .462 against California (6-of-13) with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a walk in game two of the series and hit a solo home run in a 2-for-4 performance, scoring three runs, in game three of the series. • Carroll is in his fourth season starting at third base (168 starts) and also has a redshirt year under his belt. He was a 2016 All-Pac-12 player. • Senior Hunter Simmons, who has started every game at first base, is hitting .275 and is second on the team with 20 walks. He has 19 RBI (third on the team), a .375 on-base percentage, two stolen bases (2-for-2), two doubles and two home runs. Simmons has scored 19 runs. • Simmons went 3-for-5 with three RBI in game one of the series against Cal, including a home run. He was 1-for-4 with two RBI in game two of the series. • Simmons earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after hitting .569 (9-for-16) with six RBI against Nebraska and Ohio State. • Simmons has 146 starts (163 games) over four seasons. • Freshman Oliver Dunn has started all but one game at second base. He is hitting .254 with 17 RBI, four doubles and a triple. He has scored 22 runs and has two stolen bases. • Dunn went 5-for-6 in game two against California, driving in four runs with two doubles and three runs scored. He also had a hit in game three of the series, hitting .429 (6-of-14) for the weekend with five RBI. • Senior Ellis Kelly has started in 18 games at shortstop, including the last 10 games. He has had a hit in all but one of those last 10 games. • Kelly is hitting .308 on the season with two doubles, two triples and seven RBI, scoring 10 runs. He has not made an error in the field. • Kelly hit .417 (5-of-12) with a triple and four RBI against California. He went 1-for-4 with two RBI, a triple and scored three runs in game two of the series and was 3-for-4 in game three with an RBI. • Kelly, a JC transfer, has started 37 games at short over the last two seasons. • Junior Kyle Hoffman, who has started 13 games at short, is hitting .233 with three doubles, a triple, four RBI and 11 runs scored. He has a .353 on-base percentage. • Hoffman, in his third season at Utah, has played in 42 games with 22 career starts.

2017 Utah Baseball • Utility player junior Wade Gulden has started 20 games at designated hitter with appearances in 28 games. He is hitting .275 with a double, two home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and a stolen base. • Gulden has played in 91 games in his career with 51 starts between the infield, outfield and DH. • Utility redshirt freshman Connor McNally has played in 15 games with two starts (one at DH, one at 2B). McNally has a .471 on-base percentage, is hitting .250, is 2-for-2 in stolen bases and has scored three runs with four walks. • Redshirt freshman Jake Portaro has played in seven games with a start at DH.
Outfield
• Sophomore DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center and senior Josh Rose in right have started every game. Sophomore Chandler Anderson and freshman Dominic Foscalina have both started in left field. • Keirsey is hitting .336 on the year (second on the team) and is fifth in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.48). He is tied for the league lead with four triples. Kiersey is tied for seventh in the league in hits (46), eighth in total bases (69) and ninth in the Pac-12 in runs scored (28). He is second on the team with 19 RBI, a .504 slugging percentage and a .395 on-base percentage, and is tied for second on the team with three home runs. He has six doubles and three stolen bases. Keirsey is tied for the team lead with 16 multiple-hit games. • Keirsey is on a 10-game hitting streak. He hit .357 (5-of-14) against California with two triples and five runs scored. Keirsey went 3-for6 with two RBI, two triples and three runs scored in game three of the series. • Keirsey was All-Pac-12, a Freshman All-American and member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team last season. • Rose is hitting .248. He is tied for third in the league in walks (24) and has a .385 on-base percentage. Rose is second on the team with eight doubles. Catcher
• Sophomore Zack Moeller has played in 29 games with 26 starts at catcher (plus one at DH). He is hitting .253 on the year and is tied for second on the team with three home runs. Moeller has a .400 slugging percentage, 16 RBI, 18 runs scored and five doubles. Moeller has been involved in three pickoffs, which is tied for second in the conference, and has caught eight runners stealing (tied for third in the league). He also leads the team in HBP (eight, tied for fifth in the Pac-12). • Moeller went 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two against California and was 1-for-4, including a three-RBI single, in game three of the series. • Moeller started part time last year at catcher. • Freshman Alex Isola has played in eight games with five starts at catcher. He is hitting .188 with four RBI and a double. • Junior Matt Poulin has played in two games and is 1-for-3 at the plate. • Senior Max Schuman has played in 15 games with four starts at designated hitter. He has one relief appearance at catcher. Schuman is hitting .136 with four RBI, two doubles and two walks. • Schuman has experience behind the plate but has started 63 games at designated hitter in his career and played in 146 total games.
Pitchers
• Junior Josh Lapiana is 2-4 on the year with a 4.47 ERA and has 36 strikeouts. He has pitched 44 1/3 innings with nine starts. • Junior Jayson Rose leads Utah and is seventh in the Pac-12 with 49 strikeouts. Rose is 4-2 on the year with a 4.04 ERA and has thrown 55 2/3 innings (ninth in the Pac-12). • Rose allowed one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks over eight innings in Utah’s 9-3 win over California last weekend. • Rose, a preseason NCBWA All-American and 2016 All-Pac-12 pick, broke the Utah singleseason record for strikeouts last year with 106. • Sophomore Riley Ottesen is 4-1 with a 3.70 ERA and 37 strikeouts. He is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with 56 innings pitched. • Ottesen pitched 3 1/3 innings against California on Saturday, striking out four in a no decision. • Senior Dylan Drachler has four saves, which is tied for sixth in the Pac-12. He has pitched in 13 games (18 innings) and has a 4.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts. Drachler is 0-3 on the year. • Drachler has saves against Stanford, Nebraska, Ohio State and New Mexico State. • Drachler has 13 career saves over 71 career appearances on the mound. • Freshman Chase Bauerle leads the team with a 2.13 ERA. He has pitched in 11 games (25 1/3 innings pitched) and allowed six earned runs with 17 strikeouts. • Bauerle earned the win in game two against California, throwing 4 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. • Junior Tanner Thomas is 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA over 14 appearances (25 2/3 innings). He has 18 strikeouts.
