Utah Baseball Faces Utah Valley in Midweek
The Utah baseball team travels to Orem on Tuesday, April 25, for a midweek game against Utah Valley. Tuesday’s game begins at 6:00 p.m. MT. Tuesday’s game is the second between Utah and Utah Valley this season. In the first meeting on March 22, Utah fell to the Wolverines, 9-7. Although the Utes took an early lead in the game, UVU rallied and held as much as a fourrun lead. The Utes came within a run in the seventh inning, 8-7, before Utah Valley added an insurance run in the eighth en-route to the win. Spencer Kevin Johnson will make his first career start for the Utes on the mound against Utah Valley. Utah (17-17, 8-10 Pac-12) has won five of its last six games, including sweeping thenseventh-ranked Arizona last weekend. Utah ranks second in the Pac-12 with a .291 batting average. The Utes are second in the league in runs scored (212), RBI (191) and onbase percentage (.380) while ranking fourth in slugging percentage (.401). The Utes are tied for fourth in the league in hits (350). The Utes rank sixth in the Pac-12 in earned run average (3.81) Utah is fifth in the conference in fewest hits allowed (305) and tied for fifth in fewest runs allowed (156). Utah leads the league in fewest home runs allowed (10) and pickoffs (nine). Dallas Carroll ranks third in the Pac-12 in batting average (.391) and slugging percentage (.609) while ranking second in on-base percentage (.472) and hits per game (1.59). He is also tied for third in the league in doubles. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., is tied for second in the league in triples (four), is fourth in hits per game (1.53) and ranks seventh in hits (52). Utah Valley is 13-24 overall and 6-6 in the WAC. The Wolverines recently won two of three over Chicago State.
Infield
• At third base, senior Dallas Carroll ranks in the top five in the league in multiple categories. He is third in batting average (.391), second in on-base percentage (.472) and third in slugging percentage (.609). Carroll is second in the conference in hits per game (1.59) and tied for fourth in hits (54). He is tied for third in doubles (13), fifth in RBI (34) and total bases (84) and is tied for eighth in stolen bases (7-of-8). Carroll is the eighth--toughest player to strike out (once in every 9.9 at bats). Carroll leads the Utes with
four home runs and is tied for second on the team with two triples and is also second with 28 runs scored. He is third on the team with 20 walks. He leads Utah with nine multipleRBI games and is second on the team with 17 multiple-hit games. • Carroll, who is on a six-game hitting streak, hit .417 (5-of-12) with three walks and four RBI in the three-game series against Arizona. He was 3-for-5 with two RBI in game one, drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning of game two of the series and put Utah up 1-0 in game three with an RBI single. • Carroll is in his fourth season starting at third base (171 starts) and also has a redshirt year under his belt. He was a 2016 All-Pac-12 player. • Senior Hunter Simmons, who has started every game at first base, is hitting .299 and is second on the team with 21 walks and 24 RBI. He has a .390 on-base percentage (third on the team), two stolen bases (2-for-3), four doubles and two home runs. Simmons has scored 21 runs. • Simmons hit .500 against Arizona (7-of-14) with five RBI and two doubles. He hit a two-RBI single in the ninth inning of game two of the series and his two-RBI single in game three gave Utah a 3-0 lead. • Simmons earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after hitting .569 (9-for-16) with six RBI against Nebraska and Ohio State. • Simmons has 149 starts (166 games) over four seasons. • Freshman Oliver Dunn has started all but one game at second base. He is hitting .261 with 19 RBI, four doubles and a triple. He has scored 25 runs (third on the team) and has two stolen bases. • Dunn had two hits and an RBI in games two and three of the series against Arizona. He drove in the game-tying run in the eighth inning of the second game of the series. • Senior Ellis Kelly has started in 21 games at shortstop, including the last 13 games. He has had a hit in all but two of those last 13 games. • Kelly is hitting .325 on the season with a .416 slugging percentage (third on the team), three doubles, two triples and 12 RBI, scoring 13 runs. He has not made an error in the field. • Kelly hit .417 (5-of-12) with five RBI against Arizona. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI in game one and was 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two of the series. Kelly made a leaping grab on a line drive in the seventh inning of game three to save a run.

2017 Utah Baseball • Kelly, a JC transfer, has started 40 games at short over the last two seasons. • Junior Kyle Hoffman, who has started 13 games at short, is hitting .233 with three doubles, a triple, four RBI and 11 runs scored. He has a .353 on-base percentage. • Hoffman, in his third season at Utah, has played in 42 games with 22 career starts. • Utility player junior Wade Gulden has started 24 games at designated hitter with appearances in 31 games. He is hitting .267 with a .371 on-base percentage, a double, three home runs (tied for second on the team), 13 RBI, 16 runs scored and a stolen base. • Gulden hit a two-run home run in game one of the series against Arizona. • Gulden has played in 94 games in his threeyear career with 54 starts between the infield, outfield and DH. • Utility redshirt freshman Connor McNally has played in 15 games with two starts (one at DH, one at 2B). • Sophomore DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center and senior Josh Rose in right have started every game. Sophomore Chandler Anderson and freshman Dominic Foscalina have both started in left field. • Keirsey is hitting .344 on the year (second on the team) and is fourth in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.53). He is tied for second in the league with four triples. Kiersey is seventh in the league in runs scored (33), tied for seventh in the league in hits (52) and ranks ninth in total bases (76). He is second on the team with a .503 slugging percentage, a .408 on-base percentage, and five stolen bases (5-of-10) while ranking third with 23 RBI. He is tied for second on the team with three home runs. Keirsey has seven doubles. He leads Utah with 18 multiple-hit games. • Keirsey has had a hit in 12 of his last 13 games (he had an 11-game hitting streak snapped in game two against Arizona) and hit .417 (6-of-14) with two RBI over the three games against the Wildcats. Catcher
• Sophomore Zack Moeller has played in 32 games with 29 starts at catcher (plus one at DH). He is hitting .255 on the year and is tied for second on the team with three home runs.
