A Look at the Brewers The Brewers took care of business yesterday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium against their opponents today, knocking off Bard College twice to set up the biggest two games of their year this afternoon. Vassar enters today knowing that two wins puts itself back into the Liberty League Tournament for the second consecutive season. Also, Vassar College is could clinch its best winning percentage ever with two wins this afternoon. Vassar will honor its seniors this afternoon for Senior Day, a class that has seen all four members be huge contributors for the Brewers. With his three hits yesterday, Brett Zaziski now sits 10 hits short of becoming the all-time hits leader at Vassar, while his homer Saturday vaulted him into the all-time HR lead with eight. Senior Joe Lovizio looks to help push the Brewers into the playoffs in his 29th career start today.
A Look at the Raptors Bard College finishes its first season as a Liberty League member this afternoon, coming in with a 3-24-1 record and 0-18-1 mark within the conference. The Raptors may not have a League win thus yet, but have been very competitive at times and also earned their conference tie against the current Liberty League leader in Union College. The Raptors have only been in existence for two seasons, after over a 75-year absence without the sport at the College. Bard is led by two-way threat Dylan Long, who comes into the doubleheader leading the squad in batting with a .385 average, while posting a 4.40 earned run average in 30.2 innings of work. Alec Montecalvo is batting .307 with 23 hits and the team’s lone homer this season, while JP Fisher has started all 28 games and is batting .298 with a team-best 28 hits and five doubles.
Liberty League Tournament Possibilities Sunday marks the final regular season day for teams within the Liberty League to get their games in. With all of the rain and snow cancellations this year, the top four teams that go to the Tournament will be selected based on winning percentage. The standings (below, left) favor the Brewers, but below are the possiblities depending on other results around the league today. Vassar Wins Twice - Sits at 13-7 (.650) - Finishes 4th if Clarkson def. Skidmore twice, and Union wins one game against RIT. - Finishes 3rd if Clarkson loses once with Skidmore, and Union wins one game against RIT. - Finishes 2nd if Clarkson loses once, and Union swept by RIT. Vassar Wins Once - Sits at 12-8 (.600) - RIT and SLU cannot pass Vassar with two wins, only RPI could pass VC with two wins. If RPI won twice, VC could still get in if Clarkson lost twice to Skidmore.
Brewer Bio on . . . Trent Berg Berg, the freshman left-hander from Milton, Massachusetts, has been one of the best 1-2 freshman combos in the nation this year for the Brewers. Berg possesses a fastball that sits around 84-86, and his breaking ball is among the best the in the conference. Berg has been effectively wild at times, but his strikeout totals have been very solid all season. Berg has a confidence when on the mound, a trait that himself as well as fellow freshman Adam Erkis possess. Berg comes into today’s doubleheader with a 7-1 record, posting a 1.87 earned run average over eight appearances. He has thrown 43.1 innings this year, and is allowing opposing hitters to bat a miniscule .179 off of him. Over his last five starts, he has allowed just four earned runs over 25 innings, striking out 15 hitters and allowing just 19 hits over that span.
