A Look at the Brewers Vassar is riding high after a big sweep of St. Lawrence University yesterday afternoon, as the Brewers earned wins with scores of 4-3 and 3-1. The freshman duo of Adam Erkis and Trent Berg allowed three earned runs over 12 combined innings of work, and junior Kyle Casey posted a big three-run triple in game two to lift VC to the win. Vassar now has a record of 9-2 on games played on weekdays, and is also 7-3 at home this year. Brett Zaziski leads all Brewer hitters with a .429 average, slugging .743 and getting on-base at a .549 clip. Nick Johnson is hitting .359 with a team-best 14 doubles, and Brooks English leads the team with 18 RBI. The freshman pair of Erkis and Berg are now a combined 10-1 on the season, while Berg has allowed batters to hit only .170 against him. Connor Cucalon hasn’t allowed a run all season in 9.1 innings of work.
A Look at the Valiants MC is led at the plate by Chris Conklin, who is batting a healthy .451 with 37 hits in 82 at-bats this season. Teammate Kurt Hommen is hitting .447 in limited action this season, and Jordanis Nunez has played all but one game, posting a .388 batting average with eight doubles and two homers. Joe Anselmi has a team-best 14 doubles and is the reigning MAC Player of the Week, and Robbie Lynch leads the team with four long balls. The pitching staff for Manhattanville has a bunch of hurlers that have seen lots of innings. Nine pitchers in all have tossed more than 10 innings. Joe Palmeri has a 1.59 earned run average in nine appearances with four saves, while Joe Pareres has tossed 27 innings, chalking up a 6.28 ERA and a 2-2 record. As a team, the Valiants have an earned run average of 6.60.
All-Time Matchup With Manhattanville The Brewers and Valiants have had a healthy series with each other since first playing each other back in 1993. Since then, MC has a 12-9 record against Vassar, but the Brewers have captured wins in four of the last six games with Manhattanville. Last season in Purchase, NY, VC knocked off M’Ville 17-11 on May 1, 2013, as Brett Zaziski had four hits in that affair. Brewer Bio on . . . CORY WUENSCHELL Wuenschell, a catcher from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has stepped up this year and grabbed the majority of the catching innings for Vassar. Wuenschell has started and played in 18 games this year, batting .283 with four doubles and eight runs scored. He has some of the best power on the team, and his potent bat has fit in nicely in the middle of the lineup for Vassar. Wuenschell also has been consistent behind the plate, as he has been a solid mentor to the young pitching staff in 2014. As of Wednesday, Wuenschell is fourth on the team in slugging percentage, having launched a pair of homers earlier this season in Florida against Franklin & Marshall College. He is third on the squad in RBI with 16, and has five multi-hit games this year including a four-hit affair against Clarkson University on April 6.

Brewer Bio on . . . CORY WUENSCHELL Wuenschell, a catcher from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has stepped up this year and grabbed the majority of the catching innings for Vassar. Wuenschell has started and played in 18 games this year, batting .283 with four doubles and eight runs scored. He has some of the best power on the team, and his potent bat has fit in nicely in the middle of the lineup for Vassar. Wuenschell also has been consistent behind the plate, as he has been a solid mentor to the young pitching staff in 2014. As of Wednesday, Wuenschell is fourth on the team in slugging percentage, having launched a pair of homers earlier this season in Florida against Franklin & Marshall College. He is third on the squad in RBI with 16, and has five multi-hit games this year including a four-hit affair against Clarkson University on April 6.
