Fusible Machine Appliqué Tips • Fusible machine appliqué is a fast and easy technique to place colorful fabric shapes in your quilt design. • Use a lightweight fusible web that is suitable for sewing and trace the appliqué shapes on the paper side. Leave ¼" (6.35mm) between the shapes to use the fusible web efficiently. continued on next page...

tips continued... • Windowing technique – Fusible web can make the shape a little stiffer, so to keep the fabric soft, cut out the center of the shape, leaving about ¼" - ³⁄8" (6.35mm x 9.50mm) of fusible on the inside of the traced line. • Re-use “windows” cut from larger pieces to trace smaller shapes for better use of the fusible web. • Cut the pieces apart ¹⁄8" (3.18mm) beyond the traced line and press the fusible appliqué to the wrong side of the fabric, adhesive side down, following the manufacturer’s directions. Let the pieces cool. • Carefully cut out the pieces on the traced line. Small spring action scissors make this an easy task. • Peel off the paper backing. A clear adhesive will remain on the wrong side of the fabric. Creasing the paper or scoring it with a pin will make it easy to remove. • Position the appliqué shapes, glue side down, on the right side of the background fabric and fuse in place according to the manufacturer’s directions. • Finish and secure the cut edges with a small zig zag, satin, or buttonhole stitch. The right swing of the needle should cover the cut edge of the appliqué. Using a coordinating or contrasting thread will give a different visual effect. Use a sharp machine needle that corresponds to the thread you select. Test on scrap fabric to determine the type, length, width of stitch and thread you prefer.

• Some people prefer to use tear away stabilizer under the background fabric to keep the appliqué flat and smooth while stitching around the edges. Another option is to spray the appliqué with spray starch to stiffen the fabric and help keep the pieces smooth during stitching.
Cutting Use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut the number of pieces from each fabric listed below. Remove selvages before cutting. Refer to the appliqué instructions to cut the shapes from the templates. (wof = width of fabric from selvage to selvage) Lavender Tonal - 20" x 21" (50.80cm x 53.34cm): Cut 4 Small Petals from Template B Cut 4 Circles from Template C
White Multi - 20" x 21" (50.80cm x 53.34cm): Cut 4 Large Petals from Template A (place on the diagonal so print will be vertical on the petal)

Appliqué 1. Use a pencil to trace all of the appliqué shapes from the template onto the paper side of the lightweight fusible web: 36 Template A, 36 Template B, and 9 Template C. Follow the suggested layout for best use of fusible web. Trace Template B inside of Template A to conserve fusible web. Cut the pieces apart ¹⁄8" (3.18mm) beyond the traced lines, handling gently to keep fusible and paper from separating. Use the “windowing” technique to reduce stiffness. “Windowing” Technique

4. Fold a White on White 12 ½" (31.75cm) background square in half and lightly press a crease; unfold. Fold in half in the other direction, lightly press a crease. Fold again to form creases on the diagonals. Repeat for all nine background squares. 5. Select four matching Large Petals (Owl Multi). Place the first one, adhesive side down, on the right side of one quadrant of a White on White background square, matching the center crease with the diagonal crease as shown. Repeat to place the other three petals in the other quadrants so centers meet. Fuse according to the manufacturer’s directions. 6. Center the Small Petals (White on White) over the Large Petals, matching the ends in the center. Center and place one circle (Turquoise Tonal) covering the ends and fuse. Repeat to make two. 7. Finish and secure the edges of the appliqué with a small zig zag, satin, or buttonhole stitch.

9. Refer to the diagram for placement of the blocks, three blocks in each of three rows. Pin and sew the blocks in each row together. Press as shown by the arrows. Each row should measure 12 ½" x 36 ½" (31.75cm x 92.71cm). 10. Sew the rows together, nesting the intersecting seams. Press the seams in one direction. The completed quilt top should measure 36 ½" x 36 ½" (92.71cm x 92.71cm).

Quilting Options: • Machine quilt the areas shown in red and black. • Hand quilt using the popular and decorative Big Stitches in the areas shown in red. Stitch ¼" (6.35mm) from the edge of the small petals and ¼" – ³⁄8" (6.35mm x 9.50mm) outside the edge of the large petals using pink and purple Perle cotton or embroidery thread (see tip for additional stitching information). Alternate the pink and purple thread around each block. When finished quilting, trim backing and batting even with quilt top.
Quilting Tip • Big Stitch Hand Quilting – Start with an approximate 18" (45.72cm) length of #5 or #8 Perle cotton or embroidery thread (six strands) and a #5 embroidery needle. Follow the edge of the appliqué shapes (for no marking). Use of a hoop is optional. Tie a knot at the end of the thread and “pop” it through the layers from the back. Take even running stitches through all layers, about ¼" (6.35mm) apart, one or two at a time. When you come to the end of the thread, tie a knot and “pop” it back between the layers, burying it in the batting.
12. To make the binding, remove selvages and sew the short ends of the four Purple Floral strips 2 ½" x wof (6.35cm x 1 meter) RST end to end at a 45-degree angle to make one continuous strip; press seams open. Press one short end ¼" (6.35mm) to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press.
Leaving a 2" (5.08cm) tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded binding even with the edge of the quilt top and sew, mitering the corners. Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the binding. Fold binding over to back and hand stitch.
Finished Care Instructions: Machine wash in cold water, gentle cycle. Tip: Before drying, check for fabric dyes that may have run. If fabric dyes run, rewash and rinse using Shout Color Catcher®. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry low.
