9/30/13  Ryan Cretens  U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Team Member

Ryan Cretens is this week's Capital Area RailHawks Player Spotlight. Ryan is a goalkeeper for the U17/U18 Capital Area RailHawks Team for the 2013-2014 season. Ryan started playing soccer at the age of 7, playing in the Recreational Division of the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). Cretens moved up to the Challenge Division at CASL at the age of 10 and into the Classic Division at age 13. Ryan played under Coach Martin Smith throughout the entirety of this 6 year stretch and was awarded the Hamilton Sportsmanship Award in 2007. At the age of 16, Ryan earned a spot in the U15/16 CASL Chelsea FC Academy Team coached by John Bradford. Ryan credits the Academy Program for much of his skill development. “My technical skills have greatly improved in the Academy Program,” says Cretens. Cretens most memorable accomplishments as a player were winning two state cups with Wake Forest United Black, while a part of the CASL Challenge Division. He cites his greatest and most notable accomplishment as achieving his dream of being able to play and compete in the Academy Program. Ryan’s biggest coaching influences are goalkeeper coaches Matt Brown, Nic Platter, and Farzin Asefnia. “They have each enhanced my physical and technical ability with their experience and different playing styles,” says Cretens. Ryan’s short term goals this season are to have a shutout in every game, make a commitment to play college soccer, and to finish high school with a 4.0 GPA, or better. His long term goal is to be a professional player overseas, or in the MLS. Ryan has high aspirations for the U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Academy Team this year. “My team goals are for our group to win the league, Academy Playoffs, and National Finals Week. I also have a goal to not have to do any more big cones,” he said. When recognizing what the Academy Program means to him, Cretens says “The Capital Area RailHawks Academy, in my perspective, is an honor and a privilege to play for. The coaching staff provides the team with knowledgeable advice and experience to help develop us into successful players. They care about our future and are willing to go above and beyond to make things happen. Everyone treats each other with dignity and respect and I enjoy being around the squad.” Best of luck to Ryan this year and the U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Academy Team.
