THIS WEEK: DARTMOUTH AND HARVARD VISIT STARR RINK

After their first conference weekend on the road, Colgate will return to Starr Rink for an early conference showdown with a pair of Ivies. Dartmouth has been one of the big surprises so far this season with a 5-0-1 start to the year and jumped to the 12th spot in both national polls. The Big Green tied Yale in its season opener and since then Dartmouth has outscored its opponents 20-7, including a pair of 4-0 shutout victories over Brown and Rensselaer. Harvard will enter this coming weekend with a 3-2-0 record and is ranked 17th in the nation. The Crimson is coming off a weekend split at Union and Rensselaer. Harvard lost to the Dutchmen 6-2 on Friday night and then shutout the Engineers 4-0 the next night.

NEXT WEEK: THANKSGIVING TRIP TO MERRIMACK

The Raiders will hit the road on Thanksgiving to face Hockey East foe Merrimack on Friday following turkey day. Last year the two teams met and settled for a 1-1 tie at Starr Rink. The Warriors were swept this past weekend with losses to nationally-ranked Boston University and also Connecticut. The two losses halted a four-game unbeaten streak. They face Boston College on Friday night for its lone game of the weekend. Merrimack enters the game with a 4-5-1 record overall and a 3-2-1 mark in Hockey East play.

LAST TIME OUT: TOUGH TRIP TO QUINNIPIAC AND PRINCETON

Colgate had a rough trip down to Quinnipiac and Princeton as the Raiders dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Quinnipiac on Friday night and then got shutout on Saturday night by the Tigers in a 4-0 loss. Colgate got a power play goal from Thomas Larkin and Spiro Goulakos scored his fourth of the season against the Bobcats. Goulakos has set a new career best with four goals this season. Eric Mihalik made a season-high 34 stops in net, including 16 in the third peTALE OF THE TAPE riod to keep Colgate in the game. 3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN 20th Season St. Lawrence ’84

Don Vaughan enters his 20th year as head coach at Colgate and has the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 313-311-71. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 18 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. In addition to his commitment to success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to the success of his student-athletes in the classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in December. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationallyranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raiders finished in the top-4 in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like how the 2008-09 season went down. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous season by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were determined by one goal or fewer and one could make a case for 27

l since two games would have ended with a one goal difference if not for a late empty net score. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a break out season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as all-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of

MORE RANKED OPPONENTS The schedule is not getting any easier for the Raiders this weekend as they welcome two ranked opponents in Dartmouth and Harvard. At the conclusion of the weekend Colgate will have played seven ranked opponents in its first 13 games of the season. The Raiders are 1-3-1 against top-20 teams with the lone win coming against No. 20 Quinnipiac at Cape Cod. IN NEED OF OFFENSE Colgate comes into the weekend with four-straight games with two or less goals after a three-game winning streak, in which the Raiders had four or more goals in each contest. They are 4-0-0 when scoring four or more goals and have not won when scoring two or less. Colgate is still at the top of the list for goals in the conference with 32, which is second behind Union. HOLDING A LEAD When the Raiders have the lead going into the third period, they have done a great job securing a lead as the team is 4-0-1 when leading after two periods of play. The last game they led in the third period was against Quinnipiac on Oct. 27 and Colgate led 2-1 after two and exploded for three goals and beat the Bobcats 5-1. POWER PLAY COMING ALIVE After a tough start to the season on the power play, Colgate has really turned it on recently. In the last six games the Raiders have seven goals with the man advantage, including all three against the Big Red two weekends ago. Colgate was 7-for-30 on the power play in those six games for a 23.3 success rate. Previously, the Raiders were 1-for-24 in the first five games. TOP POWER PLAY UNIT HAS YOUNG FLARE The first line over the boards during a power play features four rookies and a sophomore. The group has scored four of the last six power play goals with two coming from Spiro Goulakos. Kyle Baun and Tyson Spink have also scored power play goals with Baun scoring at Cornell and Spink adding one against RIT. Another rookie is leading the way on the second unit as Darcy Murphy is tied with Goulakos for the team lead with two power play goals. NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED Murphy came to Colgate in the fall after leading the Ontario Junior Hockey League in goals with 52 in 48 games and his smell for the goal has continued into college. The rookie from Marysville, Ont., has scored five goals in his first 11 games, including two power play goals. He had a four-game goal-scoring streak stopped at Cornell and had a chance to score the gamewinner in overtime, but Andy Iles came up with the save. MIHALIK MILESTONE Goaltender Eric Mihalik played in his 61st game at Cornell and it was his 60th career start. The junior ranks 12th all-time for Colgate netminders in games played. He has either shared time in net or has been the primary goaltender since arriving on campus. He is sixth on the all-time list in minutes played at 3631:02 in two-plus seasons. He has a 26-31-5 overall record and has backstopped the Raiders to back-to-back appearances in the ECAC Hockey Championship weekend. ROOKIE ON FIRE Rookie Tylor Spink has been off to one of the best starts for a Colgate newcomer in recent memory. He leads ECAC Hockey rookies in points with nine and is 17th nationally in the same category. He has scored points in six of the 11 games this season and three of those contests he has recorded multi-point games with a goal and an assist in each. BLUELINE PRODUCER Spiro Goulakos continues to stay hot on the blueline with nine points in the last six games with multi-point games in three of the six contests. He had the gamewinner with a power play goal in the win over RIT and assisted on the first goal of the night. He then added
