THIS WEEK: THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE COLGATE-CORNELL RIVALRY

What a great way to start off the league season for both Cornell and Colgate as the schools will be renewing the rivalry that dates back to 1920-21. Last season, the series went to the Raiders with a two-game sweep before falling in the ECAC Hockey Third Place Game by a 3-0 score to the Big Red. Colgate held on for a 2-1 win at Lynah Rink in the first game, followed by the best comeback in recent memory with four goals in the third period to win 5-3 and sweep the Big Red. Cornell began its regular season last weekend at home with two wins over nationally-ranked Colorado College. The Big Red shutout the Tigers, 2-0, on Friday night and followed that with a 3-2 win on Saturday.

NEXT WEEK: BACK ON THE ROAD AT QUINNIPIAC AND PRINCETON

The Raiders will continue league play next week with visits to Quinnipiac and Princeton. The Bobcats will see Colgate for the second time in two weeks after a very physical game on Cape Cod last Saturday. Quinnipiac dropped out of the rankings this week and will face American International in a weekday game before hosting the Raiders. Princeton opened their regular season last weekend in the Ivy Showcase at Brown. The Tigers dropped both games by one goal against Yale and Brown. They were picked to finish 11th by the coaches and the ECAC Hockey media.

LAST TIME OUT: RAIDERS SWEEP WEEKEND AGAINST RIT AND QUINNIPIAC

Colgate showed off its offensive skills last weekend with 11 goals in two games, including a 5-1 defeat of Quinnipiac at the Cape Cod Collegiate Classic. Prior to that game, the Raiders beat RIT at home on Friday night with their biggest evening on the power play with three goals. They were put in a 2-0 hole early in the contest and fired back with five unanswered goals en route to the 6-3 win. Quinnipiac just didn’t have answer for Colgate on Saturday night as the Raiders never trailed in the game and opened the lead up in the third period with three goals. Spiro Goulakos had the TALE OF THE TAPE best weekend of any skater with four points on two goals and two assists. GATE CORNELL

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN 20th Season St. Lawrence ’84

Don Vaughan enters his 20th year as head coach at Colgate and has the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 313-311-71. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 18 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. In addition to his commitment to success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to the success of his student-athletes in the classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in December. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationallyranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raiders finished in the top-4 in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like how the 2008-09 season went down. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous season by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were determined by one goal or fewer and one could make a case for 27

l since two games would have ended with a one goal difference if not for a late empty net score. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a break out season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as all-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of

SCORING AT WILL The Raiders enter the weekend leading the league in goals with 27, which is seven more than the closest team as Union has scored 20. Colgate has scored five or more goals in three of the first seven games, including both games last weekend. The Raiders have won all three contests and are 4-0 when scoring four or more goals. They have been holding onto leads also, as they are 4-0 when leading after two. EQUAL SCORING Colgate has spread out its scoring not only on the player stats sheet, but also during the game. The Raiders have scored nine goals in all three periods this season, which is more than any other ECAC Hockey team. Colgate has scored three goals in a period in the last three games and has won all of them. The Raiders had three in the first frame against Bowling Green, three in the second versus RIT and three against Quinnipiac in the third period. BAUN NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Rookie Kyle Baun earned the first weekly honor of the season for Colgate as he was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after his performance in the split with Bowling Green. After going scoreless in the first game against the Falcons, Baun responded in the second game with a goal and an assist in the 4-2 win on Saturday night. A BLUELINE LOOK TO THE 2012-13 CAPTAINS At the team’s annual postseason banquet, the Colgate coaching staff chose its captains for the upcoming season and the team decided to go with a defensive lineup. Senior Thomas Larkin returns for his second year as a captain, becoming the first player since Rejean Boivin ’88 to be selected two years in a row. Joining the Columbus Blue Jacket draft pick is a fellow NHL draft pick Jeremy Price, who was a pick of the Vancouver Canucks. Price is coming off his best season with 23 points on two goals and 21 helpers. Nathan Sinz has been a consistent player throughout his career with the Raiders and he is coming off a career-high nine points on nine helpers in 32 games, which was also his highest total in his career. He came through in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series against Quinnipiac with three assists. HOPING FOR A BIG SECOND YEAR The Raiders had a few rookies last year that flew under the radar with the success of upperclassmen on the roster. Joe Wilson had a great first season with 23 points as part of the first line of Austin Smith and Chris Wagner. He tallied 10 goals and 13 assists and scored in the semifinal matchup against Union. Down the stretch he had 16 points in the final 17 games of the season, including a pair of three-point nights against Cornell and Rensselaer. AN ALL-ONTARIO ROOKIE CLASS The Raiders are welcoming eight new members to the squad this season. The rookies are all from Ontario and six of the eight are coming from the Central Canadian Hockey League, while two are products of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Half of the newcomers played for the Cornwall Colts of the CCHL and made the league championship series. Kyle Baun, Mike Borkowski, Tylor and Tyson Spink will have an easier time adjusting on the ice as all four played together with the Colts. Darcy Murphy played two years with the Wellington Dukes of the CCHL and led the league with 52 goals in 48 games. Kevin Lough also played in the CCHL and had 95 points in his career as a defenseman for the Cumberland Grads. Ryan Johnston is another defenseman coming from the CCHL and he was the league’s defenseman of the Year for the GOAL BREAKDOWN Nepean Raiders and helped the Raiders to the title Type Raiders Opponent last year. SCOUTING THE BIG RED Cornell enters the home-and-home weekend series against the Raiders with a 2-0-0 overall record and is ranked fifth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll, while also being ranked sixth in the USCHO National Poll. The Big Red is coming off a sweep of Colorado College at Lynah Rink last weekend. Cornell won the first game 2-0 and then narrowly escaped with a 3-2 win on Saturday night. Cornell had great success on the power play against the Tigers with five goals on 14 chances for a 35.7 percent success rate. With only two games played, the stat sheet for Cornell is actually spread out with 10 skaters earning a point last weekend led by John Esposito and Joel Lowry who each had two goals. Nick D’Agostino, Joakim Ryan and Cole Bardreau joined the other pair with two-point weekends as each had two helpers. Both goals by Esposito and Lowry came on the power play and each had a gamewinner. Cornell has a somewhat young team with only D’Agostino reaching the 100 games played milestone last weekend. In net, there is no surprise for the Big Red as Andy Iles begins his third season with Cornell and has started off with two wins and a shutout. He has appeared in 55 games in his career and has posted a 2.19 goals against average and has 29 career victories. Iles was tested too much by Colorado College. He finished with 40 total saves in the two games and had 19 stops in his shutout in the first game. SERIES HISTORY Colgate and Cornell will be meeting for the 143rd time in the series this weekend with the Big Red holding a 74-56-12 advantage. The Raiders won the season series last year with a 2-1-0 record against Cornell. It was the second year in a row the team’s played three games in a season. Colgate won both regular season matchups to halt a win streak by the Big Red. The series against Cornell is tied for the most games play with Clarkson. Colgate has played each school 142 times and with the two against the Big Red, the Raiders will have appeared against their rival more than any other school.
