Historical Commission Board Meeting Minutes April 7, 2016 Present: Bill Segars, Chairman, Sarah Smith, Patty Holly, Loris Flowers, Suzanne Calcutt, Jane DuBose, and Brian Gandy. The meeting was held at the Historical Commission building. Bill called meeting to order. Minutes from the March 3, 2016 meeting were read and approved. Marker Program: Darlington Manufacturing Company text is complete. The West End group has canceled meetings with Brian to discuss text for marker. Brian will attempt to have another meeting with them. He will then submit the text “as is”. The Lumber marker is still in process. Brian is working on text for it. The Round-O marker is at the Sewah factory in Ohio. The Major Robert Lide historical marker has been missing since 2004. It was erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). An error was noted in the marker text and should the marker be replaced, it needs to be corrected. As of now, there are no plans to replace the marker. Wilson Crossroads marker is redone and looks good. Other The booklet “The Top 50 Things to Do in Darlington County” is expected to be completed by April 18, 2016. Mason Lodge records are still being processed. New brochure – we are waiting on the Planning Department to complete the map. Donations A handmade quilt which was made by the ladies of the Darlington Pentecostal Holiness Church of the West End. The fabric used was given by the Darlington Manufacturing Company. The quilt was donated to the Historical Commission by Mrs. Annette Ward. A softball uniform from the 1930’s was also donated. Stephen Smith donated his extensive collection of architectural drawings of renovations of houses and churches in Darlington County to the Historical Commission. The Charles Purvis family donated about 30 of their photos. Brent Holcomb donated a Magazine. Arial photo of Coker College was donated by the City The model of the Florence Stockade is expected to be on display at the Darlington Library by the beginning of May. Visitors: 162 during the month of March 2016 Upcoming Historical Society Meeting was announces as being April 21, 2016 at 6 PM @ Mr. B’s. Everyone was encouraged to attend. Information about Brian’s involvement in the community was given; Lamar Library talk, Darlington Kiwanis, Coker College and 10 blog post done. Information was giving on a possible new partnership with St. Matthews Episcopal Church and the scanning of their oldest records. Brian will be getting with the new Rector – Hunter Jordan within the next month. [email protected] Brian presented information on the OCI Yearbook Project and a motion was made by Loris Flowers and seconded by Sarah Smith to send our 400 + Annuals off for digitization. For point of information and open discussion the topic of a Historical Commission Guild was discussed. References were made to the benefit of a group of skilled docents that could assist the Commission and Brian when needed. It was also stated that this group would be a wonderful way to involve other historical organizations in the work of the Commission. This will be placed in the agenda for the following month.
