GAMMA XI GAB Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu
The fall semester of 2015 is in full stride. The brothers of the Gamma Xi chapter were all excited to come back to a full house. We have accepted twenty-seven candidates and are currently at full capacity within the chapter home with seventy total members. Gamma Xi recently initiated five of our spring candidates bringing the last initiate number to 1536. As I mentioned in the summer GAB, we were one of the top houses in grades and won intramurals in the Spring. We are striving to continue this tradition and become the top fraternity on campus. Our scores for Pursuit of Excellence were extraordinary. We received excellent in Service/ Philanthropy, Recruitment and Manpower, and Governance and Accountability. Areas we are looking to improve on are our Candidate Development and Brother Development. We recently held an all-house LEAD session in which the chapter came up with a plan of action to improve on these subcategories. For future LEAD sessions, we are looking for any alumni that would be interested in facilitating a discussion, whether it is about old times at Sigma Nu or advice you could offer for our future careers. In addition, we have plans for a service/brotherhood retreat sometime in November. During this retreat, we plan to help rebuild and clean up a farm owned by one of our brothers. Following the service event, we will hold a LEAD session focusing on critical areas that we feel need improvement. The chapter is also excited to continue the tradition of Parent’s Day taking place in early November, as well..
Lastly, homecoming weekend is October 23rd and 24th this year and the chapter is excited to see all of our alumni visit us. We thank you for willing to help improve our chapter any way possible. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at
[email protected] or by phone at 314-4205014 along with our alumni chairman Jason Reed. The chapter thoroughly enjoys learning about our past from our alumni and encourage all to stop in at any time. Fraternally, Christopher Steven Lepsky, ΓΞ 1493 Senior, Civil and Architectural Engineering

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER’S REPORT The position of Lieutenant Commander of Sigma Nu, Gamma Xi Chapter has brought with it many challenges for this fall semester, but I am eager to take them on. In order to face these challenges head on, each officer and their respective committees - including myself - have come up with SMART goals aimed at our ultimate goal of achieving Rock Chapter in our pursuit of excellence. We’ve already hit the ground running with an astounding job well done by the Recruitment chairman and his committee and a revamped Candidate Education program. My personal goal is to continue the motivation of this chapter throughout the semester as we accomplish our goals. As I’ve mentioned before, our vision is to create a brotherhood with an honorable reputation serving the community, school, and one another in the greatest possible capacity by aiming to excel out of respect for each other in pursuit of individual and fraternal goals. Also, once again, it is with tremendous honor and exuberance that I assume the position of Lieutenant Commander, and I will do everything within my power to continue the great strives Gamma Xi Chapter has made. This year marks the 112th homecoming on October 24th, and I look forward to seeing you here to celebrate. If you should have any questions, concerns, or anything of the sort please don’t hesitate to email me at
[email protected] or call 314249-6650.

MARSHAL’S REPORT This semester, the Gamma Xi Chapter is pleased to welcome twenty-seven quality men as candidates for membership. They come from a variety of backgrounds, and have already helped to improve the overall quality of the chapter. This semester, I will be leading the class through a recently revised candidate education program. This program emphasizes the importance of intellectual, personal and brotherhood development. It is my hope that throughout the semester, these young men will learn how to effectively communicate the values of Sigma Nu in their daily lives. Also, the LEAD program will be a crucial component, and we would love to have guest alumni facilitators for one or two of the sessions. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns regarding our Candidate Education Program, or if you are interested in facilitating a LEAD session. I can be reached by email (
[email protected]) or by phone at 217-299-8186. The quality of our candidate class will continue to be my top priority to ensure great additions to the Gamma Xi Chapter. Christopher Moore, ΓΞ 1500 Junior, Civil & Architectural Engineering
ALUMNI CHAIRMAN’S REPORT This is very likely the last time I will be writing to you as Alumni Chairman. Over the past 4 years I have served many positions in Sigma Nu but Alumni Chairman has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding opportunities that I have had being a Sigma Nu. The biggest news for alumni is that our application to reinstate the Alumni Chapter was approved by the Grand Council. The original Alumni Chapter was founded in 1964 but had since gone inactive. We hope to resurrect the chapter to its full potential. The first meeting of the Alumni Chapter will occur during Homecoming immediately following the Property Association meeting. It is important that as many alumni attend as is possible. But don’t think that Homecoming is all meetings and business… my committee is planning a different homecoming this year. We hope to increase alumni attendance and to do that we want to show everyone a great time. So have the family join you for a trip back to Rolla this October and celebrate Gamma Xi’s continued excellence with us. You’ll also notice that we are celebrating alumni accomplishments in this edition of the Gab. If you’ve added a member to your family, earned a promotion, started a new business, or gotten married, let us know so we can publish the news in the next edition of the Gab. To get involved with the alumni chapter please contact Todd Rastorfer or myself. Please see the agenda for the Alumni Chapter meeting attached with this newsletter. Jason F. Patio of Honor Greetings Brothers of Gamma Xi. As the chapter continues to grow, so does its history. We would like to give you the opportunity to not only leave a piece of your time here with the house, but to also help provide for the future of the house. The Patio of Honor continues to expand and it would be our pleasure to have you as our next honoree! Each commemorative brick is engraved with your name and initiation number and is placed alongside of those of your brothers. For a minimum donation of $75 you can have a brick created with your name and initiation number engraved on the front. The money will go towards the cost of the brick materials, as well as improvements to the house. We greatly appreciate your help to continually making Sigma Nu the best house on campus. BROTHERHOOD/PARTICIPATION CHAIRMAN As the brotherhood chairman, I am pleased to say we are looking forward to many events this year, including a brotherhood retreat. We have a few possible locations for our chapter to visit and would thoroughly enjoy any alumni to attend as well. After hearing back from nationals about Pursuit of Excellence, we are looking to include LEAD sessions within the retreat as well to help build our chapter even more. After last year’s win in intramurals, we are looking to continue our winning streak and have already done so with a 1st place finish in Ultimate Frisbee. We are planning on extending the lead by even more this semester as our softball team is looking to start our semester off on the right foot. We have continued our Game Room Olympics again this semester with brackets in Ping Pong, Pool, Darts, and Foosball. Also this semester, we are looking to add either a whiffle ball or volleyball tournament within the house. We are looking forward to what this semester will contribute and cannot wait to see all our alumni at homecoming this fall. Justin Habiger, ΓΞ 1490 Senior, Mechanical Engineering
RECRUITMENT Our goal for recruitment is to recruit young men with exceptional potential and are dedicated to the values of our Fraternity. Using Values-Based Recruitment, we recruit incoming freshman, or any other student at Missouri University of Science and Technology, who we see have the potential to be successful, honorable, and active students and leaders. For the fall 2015 semester, we have recruited twenty-seven qualified candidates who all have express the values of Sigma and have the potential to be leaders among their peers. This class includes four legacies, Zack Whisler, Zac Hauser, Omar Nevarez-Barron, and Matt Cammarata. We are extremely excited to see these twenty-seven young men learn what it means to be a Sigma Nu throughout the semester. As always, the rush chairmen appreciate all support that alumni can give in recruiting worthy young men. If you know a high school senior who will be attending Missouri S&T and who expresses the values and principles of Sigma Nu, please refer them to us. Please contact me at
[email protected] if you have any questions about recruitment or if you know of a qualified candidate for our chapter. Austin Foutch, ΓΞ 1518 Sophomore, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
SCHOLARSHIP Last semester, our scholarship goal was to have all members meet the GPA requirement of 2.5 and to have the entire house achieve an overall GPA of 3.20. Although we did not successfully complete our first goal by having 5 members score under the GPA requirement, we were able to collectively achieve a house average GPA of 3.258 for the spring semester. Not only did this house GPA meet our personal goal, we also ranked 3rd on campus for highest GPA among the Greek community, placing us well above the all Men, all Fraternity, and all Greek GPA averages. As Scholarship Chairman for this fall semester, I intend to use our previous incentives as well as modify and include new rewards for our members to motivate them and continue our academic success. In addition, I hope to update our file system to provide newer and better material along with easier access so we can fully utilize these resources. As a house, our goal for this fall semester is to have all members achieve the GPA requirement and to maintain an overall GPA of 3.20. Zephrem Conrad, ΓΞ1519 Sophomore, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
