Considerations:
This will be the students’ first exposure to tally charts. Graphing is not covered in Kindergarten. This lesson represents a skill necessary for mastery of 1.MD.4. Explain to students that vertical lines are used to count the first 4 numbers, while a horizontal/ diagonal line strikes through the first 4 lines, indicating a group of 5.
It may be helpful for students to mark/cross out each object as they count them.
Steps:
1. Represent each person/vote with a tally mark. 2. Count the amount of votes in each category. 3. Record total in the box.
