Grand Junction Fire FC Rec Training Session U8 Week 3 April 2-6 Theme: Passing and Receiving Aim: To learn correct passing and receiving techniques for the inside of the foot
Warm up: players in pairs, 2 cones around 8-10yds apart. Pass with inside of foot, receive with inside of foot. Pass back and forth. Progress by: increasing or decreasing distance between cones (dependent on success), have all cones at different distances and have them dribble to new cones after a pass at one, have a competition who can get the most in a minute. Coaching points: heel down toe up for passing and receiving, eye contact with partner, standing foot pointing at target, lock ankle when passing, on toes ready to receive
Technical practice: squares around 10x10 (this may vary dependent on success of warm up, don’t go bigger, but feel free to reduce distance between cones) 3 players per cone, one ball. Ball starts at a corner where a cone is open next to passer. They pass to person up the line, and immediately move to empty cone to receive from different player. Go both directions so as to use both feet Progress by: limit number of touches (3 to start, then lower to 2), only allow them to use one foot, competition for number of passes in 1 minute, add an impassive defender who can pounce upon a bad reception. Coaching points: all points as above, communication demanding ball from passer, awareness of everyone’s movement (telling each other if they don’t move after a pass), first touch in the direction of next pass
Game scenario: 25x20. Split into two teams, attackers begin by playing 3v1. Must complete 2 passes before they can score. If defender wins ball, they can break and try to score on the opposite goal. Have them switch roles regularly Progress by: setting a time limit for attackers to score, introducing a second defender after that time limit, every player including GK must touch it Coaching points: all those above, movement off the ball into areas to receive not just into space, look to play forwards when possible
Small sided game: 35x30. 2 teams, but have one team numbers up (6v4, 7v4, 7v5). Numbers up team must complete 4 passes before they can score. If defending team steal it, no limit on passes, but if a pass is completed before a goal, the pass counts as an extra goal. Rotate who plays on which team regularly. Progress by: increase reduce number of passes (for both teams) depending on success, even out the teams, all players must touch it before a goal is scored, limit passes if they aren’t looking to play forwards and score Coaching points: all above points, good angles to receive, be aware of space, aim to pass to feet where possible, short passes ideally
