Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE September 18-20, 2011 From Despair to Hope—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today the teenager goes first): Say: Summer is basically over, but I think we made some great memories as a family. One of my favorite memories from this summer is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Psalm 3:1-5

Truth • Believers can move from despair to hope by choosing to focus on God. Untruths • There is no escape from desperate feelings because there is no hope. • If God really loved me, I’d never have any problems. • The only hope I have is what I can accomplish on my own.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Enlist a parent to help with the skit below. The parent will read God’s part, while you read the believer’s part. Believer (Looking at the floor, depressed): I can’t stop thinking about all my problems. My mind is just spinning, and I’m getting more worried and frustrated every minute. God: But what about My Word and the truth you can find there? Believer (Still looking at the floor): I know, I know. Your truth is out there. But right now I’m just preoccupied with all my problems. God (Lifts the chin of the believer so the believer is looking into God’s face): My child, I want you to shift your attention from your problems to Me. Believer (Smiling): I already can feel a change beginning. When I keep my eyes on You, my problems don’t feel so overwhelming. When I’m spending time with You, Your truth makes more sense to me. You really are the Lifter of heads. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: A parent will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: The first few weeks of school can be stressful. What three actions can you take to reduce the stress in your life and in your home? Go to your parents and let them know about one action you will take to reduce the stress. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
