Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE September 21-24, 2011 Respecting God’s Authority—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: I’m also grateful for forgiveness from sin. If I were to accept forgiveness for what I have done, but refuse to forgive members of this family who hurt me, I would be . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Deuteronomy 10:12-22

Truth • God both deserves and commands respect for His authority. Untruths • God is too far away for me to worry about Him. • God is like a grandfather—He’s nice, but you really don’t have to listen to Him. • Whether or not God exists, I am my own highest authority.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Say: Let’s pretend I won a contest at school that earned our family a trip to visit the President in the White House. Ask a parent: How would our upcoming visit with the President affect our packing for the trip? Ask a sibling: What are some things you enjoy doing in your free time that you wouldn’t consider doing in the Oval Office? Ask the entire family: What are the most important reasons we should respect God far more than a leader on earth? 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Stand up and include the following thought in your prayer: Father, if I were introduced to the President I know I would stand. I am standing now as I speak to You just to show that my respect for You is far greater than my respect for any world leader. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Your respect for God is reflected in your respect for your parents. List some areas in which you could show your parents greater respect. Let them know that you want to show them greater respect in these areas and give them the freedom to hold you accountable in them.
