5th Grade June Newsletter 2018 ELA: As the school year comes to a close, we will work on our final unit of study together. Within this unit we will be reviewing various poems in order to determine the structure and analyze the figurative language used. After analyzing many poems and songs, we will also be creating and presenting our own poems. RL 5.4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. It is important to continue reading over the summer! Practice writing creative short stories, poems and letters to your friends. Remember that reading is essential to increasing our vocabulary and learning about new topics! Math: It is June! We’ve made it! This month we will be focusing on an important topic of sixth grade which is rates and ratios. We will begin to discuss what ratios are, where we see them and how they relate to information we already know. Introducing: 6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. 6.RP.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

We will be having a final on June 6th (501 and 502) and June 12th (503) to see how your children have grown since September. Students need to review their notes in their notebooks. Social Studies: Students have been working on their Exit Projects that focus on the theme of Westward Expansion. Presentations begin on June 13th. Students will share their oral presentations and visuals that focus on 4 main points of their topics that range from Davy Crockett to The Oregon Trail to The Continental Railroad to name a few. Students will be graded in 3 areas (written research paper, visual and oral presentation). Have a wonderful summer! Stay current on local news and national events and good luck in 6th Grade!!!

Science: We teach our children everything we know in life so that one day they may able to leave the next and explore this great big beautiful world of ours. For the last nine months I have been teaching your kids how to ask and answer questions like a scientist. Like a mother bird flying back and forth to her nest, bringing her offspring worms and insects, I have been coming and going to their groups providing them with ideas and skills. We call this the scientific method. Well at some point the little birdies have to prop themselves up on, fly away and find their own food. The scientific method is them learning to fly. The food they gather is knowledge. This month our students will be in complete control over all that they learn. They will choose a topic, ask a scientific question, and design an experiment to find out answer to their question. They will.... fly into this great big world of science. Remember: June 7th- No School/PD Day for Teachers June 11th- No School/ PD Day for Teachers June 15th- No School June 18th- Fifth Grade Celebration June 21st- Talent Show June 26th- LAST DAY
