ELA: The essential question that drives the unit is “How do experiences shape who you are?” Focus standards:
W.4.3-write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
RL.4.1-refer to details and examples in the text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Please be sure that your child is reading a book from their book baggy that is on their reading level for 30 minutes every night. An activity that you can do to reinforce the unit would be to have your child tell you all about their favorite birthday. Have them include in the story, an introduction that establishes the situation, description, sensory language, transitional words, and a conclusion.
Math: Our first focus of the school year is on place value. A great way to practice at home is through practice with money and budgets. I-Ready is also a great tool for extra practice. 4.NBT.2. Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons 4.NBT.3. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. 4.NBT.4. Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. 4.NBT.5. Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. 4.NBT.6. Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. Social Studies: We are doing unit 4.1 which focuses on the geography of New York State. Students are learning how to read different types of maps all within our theme. We will be focusing on the five themes of geography and becoming familiar with how to read and interpret maps. Science: Through hands on experiments students will observe, describe, and explore the properties of water and what makes it so special. Students will be introduced to writing a full lab report following the scientific method. Goals will then be put in place based on writing step by step procedures and providing concluding statements based on data.
