LAST TIME OUT: After a blazing offensive start to its week, Kutztown turned to its arms Saturday at Bloomsburg to complete a four-game sweep of the Huskies. In Game 1, Jordan Gotshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Twp.) struck out five in 3.1 innings while Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin) cruised in three relief innings, as the Golden Bears won 3-1. In Game 2, Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland) threw 5.2 shutout innings in a 2-0 win. The nightcap shutout marks for the fourth for KU this season. As a team, the Golden Bears are 15-0 when allowing three runs or fewer. O-WHAT A WONDERFUL OFFENSE: In the first three games last week, Kutztown scored 38 runs. This marks the season high for runs scored over a three-game stretch, surpassing the 36 against Shaw (DH) and Barton on March 19 and 20, respectively. In fact, KU’s six games with 10+ runs scored this year all came in these two stretches. The Golden Bears talled 4+ runs in three frames Wednesday against Adelphi (6-R B4, 5-R B6, 4-R B8), as well as once in each game Friday against Bloom (5-R B3 in G1, 8-R B3 in G2). As a team, the Maroon and Gold hits .313 with 6.3 runs/gm. THESE BEARS ARE GOLDEN: With Saturday’s sweep, the Golden Bears now won 16 of their last 17 games. This includes an 11-game winning streak from March 19 to March 30, which marks the school’s best streak is the school’s best since 2009, when the Golden Bears also won 11 consecutive. The only loss came in Harrisburg against Shippensburg to close a four-game series. With this stretch, KU now ranks 12th in the Collegiate Baseball National Poll. TIMELY HITS ARE A THING OF BEAUTY, PART 1: Especially as of late, timely hits play a key role in the team‘s success. KU started the season with an 8-7 win at Wingate in which the Golden Bears scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Also in non-conference play, KU defeated Barton in extra innings after a five-run 12th inning. Meanwhile, in conference play, Kutztown won three of its six home games against PSAC foes in walk-off fashion. Of the team’s 11 come-from-behind victories for the season, 10 of them came during the current 16-1 stretch. TIMELY HITS ARE A THING OF BEAUTY, PART 2: The Golden Bears continue to capitalize on defensive miscues, scoring 45 unearned runs this season. This includes 12 against Mansfield, with two innings (4-R B1 in 3/23 G1, 7-R T5 in 3/24 G2) standing out. Also, the team loves to play two-out bingo. KU plated 66 two-out RBI so far this season, averaging 2.4 such runs per game. This includes a season-high nine such RBI against Adelphi. Eight different players have at least five two-out RBI for the season, led by 10 from junior Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights). HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME: The Golden Bears put a true meaning to “taking one for the team.” KU batters so far have taken 38 hit by pitches this season, as opposed only 12 pitches that plunked their opponents. Five different players reached base via HBP at least five times, led by nine from Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown), who took one for the team in each of his first four games. Kutztown took a HBP in all but six games this season (77.8 percent of their games). NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP: The fifth inning seems to be the “money inning” this season. The Golden Bears won all 22 games in which they held a lead or were tied through the first five. Meanwhile, they are 0-5 when facing a deficit at this point. However, this plays only a role for a big theme for Kutztown. The Maroon and Gold have yet to lose a game in which they led after any inning. KU only gave up a lead in their second game of the season, when they held leads of 1-0 (T1) and 3-1 (T2) against Wingate that went by the wayside by the next half inning. TOO TOUGH TO EARN IT: Early in the season, Kutztown did not allow an earned run for 34 consecutive innings, which occurred during a four-game span from February 21 to March 9. KU shutout two teams at the Builder Invitational. The 5-0 blanking of Lock Haven featured a team one-hitter, while the 2-0 win over Bloomsburg featured eight different pitchers taking the mound. KU allowed unearned runs in a 5-2 victory over The Apprentice School and an 8-1 Game 1 win over Virginia State. The streak ended in the first inning of Game 2 against VSU.

Games highlighted in maroon will be broadcasted on the Golden Bear Network at kubears.com (subject to change)

Game Notes, continued HISTORY IN CARY, N.C.: In the second half of the March 19 doubleheader at Shaw, the Golden Bears combined for a seven-inning no-hitter in a 13-0 victory. KU retired the first 16 Shaw batters faced in the masterpiece, as they walked only two batters and hit one batter. Starter Tom Neely (Philadelphia/ Archbishop Ryan) retired all six batters he faced, as did reliever Dave King (Trentmore, PA/Minersville). J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Maryland-Baltimore County) pitched a perfect fifth inning. Meanwhile, Karl Von Kiel (Macungie, PA/West Mount) struck out the side in a hitless sixth, and Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) sealed the historic performance with a hitless seventh.
