Texas A&M-Commerce A&M-Commerce’s emotional 21-14 overtime victory over A&M-Kingsville Saturday evening snapped a number of streaks the Lions are happy to get rid of. It was A&M-Commerce’s first victory over A&MKingsville since 2007 and the first time they hoisted the Chennault Cup since 2001. It also marked just the second time the Lions had won the Chennault Cup on its home field since defeating West Alabama 45-6 in
the inaugural game in 1990. The Lions notched their first overtime win in program history and defeated a team from the state of Texas for the first time since 2008, snapping a 16-game skid.
Texas A&M-Kingsville For the second time this season, the Javelinas will play an opponent that has the same nickname as the opponent they faced the week before. The Javelinas opened the season by knocking off the Central Washington Wildcats and then traveled to Abilene Christian and defeated the Wildcats. This time A&M Kingsville is playing its second-straight opponent with the name Lions. This past weekend it was the A&M-Commerce Lions and this weekend North Alabama…The overtime loss at Commerce was the first OT contest for the Kingsville this season and first since beating Angelo State 36-33 in triple overtime a season ago. Under head coach Bo Atterberry, the Javelinas have gone 2-2 in OT contests. The Javs had two overtime games in 2009 downing West Texas A&M 23-17 before seeing their season end against Tarleton State 57-56 in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Championship in a double overtime contest… With three straight losses after starting the season 2-0, A&M-Kingsville is in danger of losing four straight contests this weekend for the first time since Atterberry’s first season in 2007…Saturday’s meeting with North Alabama will be the fifth between the two NCAA Division II perennial powers. The Lions won all four meetings between the two sides in the 1990s. The first two meetings came in the postseason. The firstever meeting was in the NCAA semifinals 27-25 and in the 1994 Division II title game following 16-10. In 1994, the two teams met in the NCAA Championship game in Florence, Ala. with the Lions winning 27-25 on their home field. In 1996 and 1997 the sides had a home-and-home series. In ’96, TAMUK fell 24-7 at Javelina Stadium. In 1997, the two sides battled to a 17-12 score. The meeting is part of the First and 10 Challenge between the Lone Star Conference and the Gulf South Conference. In early November, the Javelinas travel to Georgia to meet Valdosta State. The lone meeting came in the semifinals of the 2002 NCAA Championship with Valdosta winning 21-12… Despite being limited to two catches at Commerce in wet conditions, Sherman Batiste continues to be one of the top receivers not only in the conference but in the nation. With an average of 87 yards a game, Batiste is third in the Lone Star Conference and 39th in the nation. He is tied for third in the LSC in receptions along teammate Robert Armstrong at 5.80 a game. The number is 51st in DII…With an average of 11.2 yards per punt return, Joseph Vela is first in the LSC and 37th in the nation…Punter Angel Millan is 40th in the nation with an average of 39.7 yards a punt which is fourth in the league…The Javelinas have reached the red zone 16 times this season scoring 75% of the time. However, they have scored just five touchdowns in the red zone for 31%. Opponents have scored 13-of-16 times in the red zone. Eleven (65%) of the 13 trips have resulted in a TD.
4 had his best outing as a Buffalo with 125 yards on the ground and 90 yards receiving on six catches (both career-highs) and a score...Kevin VanVoris had five punts with three inside the 20 and two were downed inside the one, as well as having eight kickoffs with seven touchbacks for a 64.9 average...Dustin Vaughan returned to his 300-plus throwing game and four scores on 23 of 37 for 331 yards...The Buff “D” held Tarleton to well below its rushing average with 193 yards as it entered ranked second in the league at 240 per game and held the Texans to just 389 yards of total offense which is over 100 yards (491.3) below their average...The Buff defense tallied four sacks (16 yards) and 10 tackles for loss (32 yards) in the game... Senior Offensive Lineman Aaron Mullane is one of 147 semifinalists for the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete as he is one of just two from the LSC to make the semifinal list.
West Texas A&M Had a season-high 171 yards rushing versus Tarleton State Saturday...Team is fifth nationally in passing average at 363.2 per game and eighth nationally in total offense at 489.8 which both lead the conference...Defensively the team is seventh nationally in sacks (3.80) and seventh in tackles for loss (9.60)...On the kickoff return, WT is 10th nationally at 27.39 per return...The team ranks 21st in scoring at 39.20 points per game and 26th in scoring defense allowing 19 points per contest...Robinson
