Johnson returned the RiverHawks’ first punt of the night 80 yards for a touchdown, the third punt return touchdown in his 15-game ACU career. … The 80-yard return for a touchdown is the sixth-longest punt return touchdown in ACU history, and it’s the Wildcats’ longest punt return since M.C. Walker took one 88 yards for a score in the 1998 season-opening win at Southwestern Oklahoma State. … Redshirt freshman linebacker Chris Jones blocked two of the punts and redshirt freshman linebacker Thor Woerner blocked the other for the Wildcats. … Nate Bailey picked the first blocked punt of the air and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown, while Caleb Withrow recovered Woerner’s blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Midway through the third quarter, Bailey recovered another Jones punt block and returned the ball to the 12-yard line, setting up an ACU offensive touchdown. … The last time the Wildcats returned a blocked punt for a touchdown before Saturday was Sept. 10, 2005, when current Chicago Bears’ safety Danieal Manning blocked a punt that was scooped up and returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Chris Morris. That was the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the game, and it came late in the fourth quarter of what would eventually be a 20-14 ACU overtime victory over the then-Redmen, giving current ACU head coach Chris Thomsen his first win as a head coach. … ACU sophomore quarterback Mitchell Gale has thrown 119 straight passes without an interception dating back to last year’s regular-season-ending 15-13 loss at Midwestern State. … Gale threw an interception with 12:33 left in the third quarter, but threw 12 straight passes without a pick to end that game. He then threw 52 playoff passes last year without a pick, and has opened the 2010 season with 55 passes without an interception. … Senior wide receiver Edmund Gates recorded his 100th career catch in Saturday night’s win, and he finished the night with 101 career catches for 1,884 yards and 16 touchdowns. … He ranks 10th in school history in touchdown receptions and receiving yards and is just outside the top 10 in career catches. … Junior defensive end Aston Whiteside recorded two sacks in Saturday’s win to increase his career total to 20.5, eighth-best in school history. … Those two sacks Saturday night helped him pass former all-America defensive tackle Bill Clayton (19 sacks from 1986-89) on ACU’s career list.
Angelo State Two Grand: Angelo State wide receivers V’Keon Lacey and Dekarai Pecikonis both went over 1,000 career receiving yards in Saturday’s win over Texas A&M-Commerce in the Harvey Martin Classic. The catches to put the pair over a grand were also memorable, as Pecikonis scored on an 83-yard strike and Lacey on a 33-yard pass from ASU QB Josh Neiswander. Inching Closer: Senior quarterback Josh Neiswander is closing in on second place on the all-time passing chart at Angelo State. With 261 yards and three scores Saturday against the Lions, Neiswander has 5,839 career passing yards and is 167 yards from No. 2 Erik Hartman (1994-97). Next on the list, Ned Cox (1983-86), the Rams’ all-time leader with 7,833 yards. The First 15: The 2010 Rams are proving it’s not how you start, but how you finish. In each of the first two games, Angelo State has been outscored in the first quarter, 10-6, but boast a sparkling 2-0 record. Part of the success is the second 15 minutes of the game, during which the Rams have outscored their opponents 29-7, nearly 41 percent of the team’s total point output. Taking it Away: ASU wideouts Dekarai Pecikonis and V’Keon Lacey are racking up the catches for the offense, but their counterparts in the Ram defensive secondary are also getting their hands on the ball. Angelo State’s defense notched three interceptions in Saturday’s win over A&M-Commerce to add to three picks against Eastern New Mexico in the season-opener. Senior DB Markeith Jones leads the Rams with two interceptions. Junior defensive back Terrance Preston returned his first career interception for a touchdown Saturday.

Glover spearheaded an impressive defensive effort against the Tigers. He led the team with nine tackles and picked up his first interception of the year as part of four turnovers forced by the team. He played a key role in limited ECU to minus-9 yards rushing and only 96 yards passing. The Hoggie defense is currently ranked first in the LSC in points allowed (7.0/g), total yards allowed (140.5/g), rushing defense (20.0/g), pass defense (120.5/g), sacks (11), opponent first downs (9.0/g) and red zone defense (20.0%). Brom remained perfect in the kicking game for the season. He went 2-for-2 in field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on extra points in a 20-7 win at East Central. He drilled field goals of 26 and 30 yards in the second half and is now 3-for-3 on the season. Quarterback Nate Poppell had an uneven performance with 297 yards and a touchdown while also throwing three interceptions. He went 27-for-41 for the night. At his current pace, he is on pace to set school records for pass attempts, completions and passing yards. Wide Receiver Ryan Lincoln picked up another six catches for 56 yards against ECU. He currently had 160 career receptions and needs only 18 more to break Glenn Starks’ 33-year old record of 177. He has 2,247 career receiving yards which is fourth all-time in school history. Defensive end Matt Romig picked up another sack on Saturday giving him 4.5 for the season, tops in the LSC. He has also forced a fumble in each of his first two games. He now has 10.5 sacks in his career and needs only one more to move into the top 10 in career sacks. The Javelinas are 2-0 for the second straight year. The Hoggies have now won six straight games played outside of the state of Texas. They have also won 13 of their last 14 games played in the state of Oklahoma. The Javelinas open up their home schedule this week against Texas A&M-Commerce, a team they are 35-21-1 against all-time.
West Texas A&M PILING UP THE POINTS – Those 77 points tallied by WT at Southwestern Oklahoma State were the most scored by WT since they posted 90 at New Mexico Highlands on Aug. 25, 2005, in a 90-21 win in Don Carthel’s first game as the Buffs’ head coach. The Buffs’ 56 first-half points stands second only to the 58 points they tallied in the first half of a 75-13 win over Azusa Pacific on Sept. 13, 2008. STONEWALLED – Kudos to the WT defensive unit, which held Southwestern Oklahoma State to just 26 net yards rushing and 212 yards in total offense. SWOSU managed just 2.6 yards per play in falling to the Buffs, 77-14. NON-OFFENSIVE SCORES – In their 77-14 defeat of Southwestern Oklahoma State, WT not only scored TDs by the usual ground and air, but also by interception return (twice) as well as recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown. HAMPTON COULD GO ALL THE WAY! – RB Tommy Hampton has displayed his ability to go the distance any time he touches the football. He scored two TDs at Southwestern Oklahoma St., rushing 25 yards from scrimmage for one score and taking a swing pass 40 yards for a second TD. For the season, the Bronx, N.Y., native has gained 313 all-purpose yards, averaging 156.5 ypg. (132 rushing, 38 receiving, 143 kick return). BURTON SHOWS BIG PLAY ABILITY – Over the first two games of the 2010 season, WR Stephen Burton (Sr-1L, Lakewood, Calif.) has caught 12 passes for 183 yards and two TDs. He registered eight catches for 93 yards at #2-ranked Grand Valley State and followed with four receptions fro 90 yards and two TDs at Southwestern Oklahoma St. THE GOLDEN TOUCH – WR Brittan Golden (Jr-2L, Denver City, Texas) has come out of the chute, quickly in 2010, gaining a team-high 239 yards on 11 receptions, with two TDs. At Southwestern Oklahoma State, he gained 136 yards on just four receptions (a 34.0 ypr. average). VOSS MAKES MOST OF OPPORTUNITY – Plugging a gap at inside linebacker due to an injury to Anthony Scott, ILB Kyle Voss (So-1L, Belton, Texas) has made the most of his two initial career starts. At SWOSU, he had a game-high eight tackles (five solo, three assists) at SWOSU, including 1.5 TFLs for minus-seven yards and a QB sack for minus-four yards. For the year, Voss stands second among Buff defenders with 17 stops and 3.5 TFLs for minus-13 yards. BRAMAN A ONE-MAN WRECKING CREW – While playing just two quarters during WT’s 77-14 win at Southwestern Oklahoma State, DE Bryan Braman (Sr-1L, Spokane, Wash.) recorded three stops, including a TFL for minus-five yards, one PBU and blocked a punt (which was recovered for a WT touchdown). One week earlier, at #2-Grand Valley State, Braman collected seven tackles. KULI MAKES PRESENCE KNOWN – DE Simi Kuli (Jr-TR, Hawthorne, Calif.) also saw limited playing time at SWOSU. But, while on the field, he recorded four stops, including 1.5 TFL’s for minus-14 yards and one QB sack for minus-10 yards.
