Winter Break

Reminders

Our Learning Math: We reviewed Unit 3. We continued to review Unit 3 and then took the district unit assessment to show what we know. Students received remedial and/or enrichment instruction throughout the review days. As a result of additional time and finishing our unit early, we have been reviewing concepts from the 1st and beginning of 2nd trimester (time, graphing, area, perimeter, multiplication, and division). Next week, we will finish up reviewing (our focus will be on time, interpreting and making bar graphs, and area and perimeter). We will show what we know in a variety of ways. If time allows, we will begin Unit 4 with delving into multiplication and division word problems. We will focus on 2 questions word problems and multi-step word problems, as well (OA 3 & 8). Shared Reading: We continued Unit 2. We read a nonfiction text, Penguins, where we learned how to use information gained from visuals and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (RI 3.7). We focused heavily on reading maps and diagrams to show a true understanding of how informational texts represent information in a multitude of ways. In grammar, we continued to practice using dictionaries, in addition to learning a new skill: using the dictionary to check for correct spelling (L.3.2.G). Next week, we will wrap up RI 3.7 and begin RL 3.7, explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting) with the story: Owl Moon. In grammar, we will work on shades of meaning and identifying the differences between their meaning, e.g., knew, believed, suspected, heard, wondered (L.3.5.C). Writing: We finished publishing our opinion pieces and began a new opinion piece on how we can “change the world,” where we are writing about changing an issue with stating reasons why it’s an issue by backing up our reasons with research. Next week, we will continue drafting and begin learning how to research and cite our evidence. Science: We continued our adaptations unit. We will heavily focus on this unit after winter break.

Please check your child’s agenda nightly for important notes. Make sure to practice multiplication facts nightly! Students will be quizzed after break.
