Pastor’s Pen Do you ever struggle to follow God’s will in your life? Or am I the only one? Yep, I’m a preacher. And yep, I struggle. Sometimes I feel completely in tune with God, everything is going the way it should, God’s in His heaven and all is right with the world. Then there are other times when I feel completely clueless, I keep asking God to tell me something in a way that I can see and understand, and it feels like God is on vacation and the world is dark and scary. Of course, God is always in His heaven and always working to make all right with the world. But oh how often we struggle to figure out what exactly God is telling us, what God is leading us into. When I was younger, I often wanted there to be an 800-number where you could call God and ask a question – even if it had to be a Yes or No one! Then I thought that might be asking too much, so I thought maybe you could limit it to one call a year, or one a decade, or even one during your life. But just think – if there was such a phone number, would you use it? What if we got the answer we didn’t want??? We humans can be, to quote my grandmother, persnickety. Sometimes we know all too clearly what God wants us to do, but the honest truth is we don’t want to do it. Sometimes we can’t figure it out. Sometimes it’s clear and we just don’t want to. This isn’t something to beat ourselves up about – it puts us in good stead, right there with Peter, James, John, Moses, Jonah, and so many others. But think about those people: God didn’t give up on them, and they didn’t give up on God. Despite betrayals, running away, arguing with God, somehow, some way, they all found their way back to God. So what I want to say this month is really quite simple: don’t give up. Life can be confusing, painful, and frustrating. But it is also always filled with hope, promise, and joy. Remember Romans 8 – nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. What follows is a prayer by Thomas Merton. I invite you to use it as you seek to follow God’s will in your life. Prayers and blessings and love, Sean
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. ~ Prayer by Thomas Merton
