The Edgewood College volleyball team split a pair of openers last week with a tough, 3-1, defeat to UW-Eau Claire in their home debut and a 3-0 victory in their conference opener at Wisconsin Lutheran. Junior Emily Chaussee earned her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11) defeat to UW-Eau Claire on Monday night in the Eagles home opener. Down two sets, the Eagles (3-7, 1-0 NACC) rallied back with a 25-23 third set victory behind a flurry of timely kills. After a 19-19 tie, the Eagles utilized kills by Chaussee, Renee Meister, and Erika Van Engen to take the 24-22 lead. A subsequent Blugold kill didn’t faze the Eagles as senior Savannah Koester wrapped up the set with one of her nine kills. The Blugolds took control in the final set and ran away with the match after building a 15-2 lead. Errors plagued the Eagles as they mustered a -.304 hitting percentage and allowed UWEau Claire to hit .280. Eagles head coach Paul Schlomer challenged his Eagles squad with a difficult non-conference schedule to open the season. For the opening night of NACC play, the strategy seems to have worked, as the Eagles swept past Wisconsin Lutheran College 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 for a conference schedule opening win. Meister was an unstoppable force, scoring 13 kills on just 18 attempts with one error for a hitting percentage of .667. Meister also posted a team-high four blocks including two solo efforts.
About the Inferno Alverno is 5-6, 1-0 NACC after beating Rockford, 3-0, in their conference opener on September 13. The Inferno peppered the Regents with 13 service aces and a .300 hitting percentage. Jessica Wewers is second in the NACC with 2.97 kills per set and 0.87 blocks per set for a team that ranks third in the NACC with 23 solo blocks.
