Despite matching No. 21 UW-Oshkosh shot-for-shot in the first half and getting a career-high 19 points from sophomore Sy Staver, the Edgewood College men’s basketball team dropped their home opener, 74-63, after being outscored by 20 points at the free throw line. Led by a balanced scoring effort and a rebounding advantage over the taller, longer Titans, the Eagles found themselves down just two points at the break. UW-Oshkosh, the WIAC preseason favorites, utilized a 14-3 run to stake a 48-35 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. A pair of Staver free throws pulled them to within eight points with 5:26 remaining, but the Titans (2-1) kept the Eagles at bay from the free throw line. Staver kept the Eagles (0-2) in it and was stellar from the outset after adding a game-high six assists to go with five rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. The sophomore found the lane on a majority of his touches and converted five of his team’s seven free throws. The Eagles outshot the Titans from the field and the threepoint line and thanks to sophomore Tyler Lemke’s career-high 11 rebounds, also held the advantage on the boards, 39-37. Sophomore McClain Steffens chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore Emil Radisevic added seven points and eight boards.

About the Muskies Lakeland University dropped their NACC opener on Tuesday night against MSOE 77-63. Joshuan McNeal led the Muskies with 21 points, while the leading scorer on the season Brandon James poured in 16 points. Lakeland is still looking for their first win of the season, having also fallen at home to Northland and UW-La Crosse.
