Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE August 10-13, 2011 Serving with Humility—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: I also care about our family’s name. One thing I choose to avoid in order to protect our family name is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: John 13:1-5,12-17; Mark 9:33-35
Truth • Believers should serve each other in love, humbly following the example of Christ. Untruths • I am special and deserve all the attention others want to give me. • I have my own problems and don’t have time to think about others. • The whole point of going to church is connecting with the “in” crowd.
3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Say: This is a true story. A large youth camp featured a well-known speaker. While everyone was at recreation, the speaker discovered the camp bathrooms were filthy. Secretly, he spent his afternoon unstopping toilets, carrying out trash, and scrubbing fixtures. By accident, someone discovered what he had done and word spread among the youth in camp. Ask these questions and discuss responses in light of today’s passages: • If you were a famous speaker, would it be easy to convince yourself that you deserved quiet afternoons in air-conditioned comfort? • How do you think the students at the camp responded to messages from a speaker who secretly cleaned their restrooms? • If Jesus had been the camp pastor, what would He have done about the filthy bathrooms? • Do you have more rights and privileges than Jesus? 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: As a sign of humility, ask family members to kneel. Include this thought in your prayer: Jesus, remove any hint of the idea that I am too important to serve. I want Your example to rule my life. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents to join you in an action that would help someone less fortunate. Talk about different ideas and agree on an action. Set a date to carry it out. Tell your parents that you appreciate working with them to help others. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
