Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE August 14-16, 2011 Loving Those Who Are Different—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it is your turn, say: Thanks for sharing your feelings. I look forward to being on my own, but it will be difficult. I will feel . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: Luke 10:25-35
Truth • God wants me to love my neighbors even when they are different from me. Untruths • No one can tell me whom to love or not love. • God understands when I don’t love people who are different from me. • I avoid people who are different, so loving them really isn’t an issue.
3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Say: This is a fact quiz. Raise your hand if you think the following statements are true. Read the following: • The Jewish man was attacked, beaten, and robbed on his way to Jericho. • Two Jewish religious leaders (a priest and a Levite) decided not to help the injured man. • A Samaritan cared for the injured Jewish man. • The Samaritan man left two days’ worth of funds to provide for the injured man. • Jesus used this story to teach us to love people who are different. • We don’t have to love people who are different from us until they love us first. Explain that only the final statement is false. Ask: Why is it so hard to leave our comfort zones and reach out to people who are different? Emphasize that if we pay attention, we will find that God gives us many chances to love “neighbors,” regardless of any differences. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Say: Father, help me be sensitive to those who are different from me. Help me care about and love people from a different culture or social status. Close this step with your personal prayer. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Parents need to hear good things from you daily. Commit to saying “I love you” to your parents each day. Let them know that you want to communicate your love for them each day. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
