Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE December 28-31, 2011 Ministry as Vocation—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: The person I marry will be more important to me than I can say. Watching you offer love to someone who is that important to me will make me feel . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Timothy 5:17-18; and 3 John 3-4 Truth • God calls out particular believers to do Christian ministry as their vocation. Untruths • I don’t think God calls people like me to be paid ministers. • It’s like grading on the curve. The most spiritual automatically become paid ministers. • I would not be a paid minister for anything on earth. 3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Ask: What percentage of believers do you think Christ calls to minister? Wait for answers. Point out that the answer is 100 percent because Christ calls every believer to join Him in ministry every day. Say: But a smaller percentage of believers are called to make their living through ministry. Ask: Does Christ grade on the curve and only call the most spiritual to do ministry as their vocation? Wait for answers. Remind family members that when Christ called Saul (Paul) to preach to the Gentiles, he hated Christ and was killing Christians. Ask: Does serving in ministry as your vocation lead to an unhappy or a rewarding life? Wait for answers. Read 3 John 3-4. Emphasize the joy John felt because those he led were walking in truth. Say: Most ministers who invest in the lives of others can understand that kind of joy. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Include this thought as you pray aloud: Jesus, I want to honor You in whatever vocation You call me to. I know Your plan will bring You glory. If You should call me to do ministry as my vocation, I am telling You ahead of time that I will accept Your call. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parent to help you identify ways your family can bless one of the ministers of your church. As a family, pray for the work of a specific minister and plan an action to bless that minister. Thank your parent for helping you care for one of your spiritual leaders.
