Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE December 4-6, 2011 Learning Contentment—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: There are billions of families on earth. One reason I’m thankful to be part of this family is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: 2 Corinthians 11:25 and Philippians 4:11-13 Truth • Believers can find contentment in Christ, regardless of their circumstances. Untruths • When bad things happen, my contentment vanishes. • Taking the right pills can get you through bad circumstances. • I just pretend bad experiences don’t exist. 3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Walk to one wall and tell your family it represents contentment. Walk to the opposite wall and explain that it represents discontent. Say: If I am a superficial believer, circumstances will determine my contentment. If I lead a sports team to a state championship, I am content. Run to the contentment wall. Say: If I run for a student office and only get three votes, I am discontent. Run to the discontent wall. Say: But if my life is centered in Christ and I abide in Him, He is all I need for contentment. Run to the contentment wall. Say: If I discover I have an incurable disease, He is enough. If good friends abandon me, He is enough. If I am persecuted for my faith, He is enough. My contentment rests in Him. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Ask your family to join you in standing by the contentment wall. Include this thought as you pray: Jesus, fill us with Your magnificent being. Work on us until we find all we need in You. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Life goes by fast for your parents. Ask them to go to a movie with you—a movie that all of you can enjoy. Thank your parents for spending time with you.
