Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE May 18-21, 2011 Peace with Siblings—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it is your turn, say: I know you are busy. There are so many things you could be doing at this moment. I’m thankful to God for our time together. When I see you wanting to be a part of these times, I feel . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: 1 Peter 3:8

Truth • God expects us to get along with and care for others, including our siblings. Untruths • God doesn’t care how I treat my siblings. • God understands when I have to get even with someone. • Take care of yourself, regardless of the impact on others.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Say: I will read a few sentences to you. Raise your hand if you think they are true. If they are false, don’t move. Here are the sentences: • Almost everyone tries to get even when they are mistreated. • The verses for today encourage us to forgive and not get even. • The verses encourage us to show compassion to our siblings. • The verses encourage us to bless our siblings and others. • These concepts help us relate to teachers, neighbors, supervisors, and parents. Say: The apostle gives us some “handles” on how to improve our relationships with siblings and others. It is our job to put those principles to work. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Say: Think about a sibling or someone you’ve had difficulty forgiving. During my prayer, ask God to help you forgive that person. Close in prayer. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents to identify a time when they had to trust in God instead of giving up. Ask them to share what God did to help them through that situation. Pray and thank God for taking care of your parents through a tough time. Copyright 2011 LifeWay Press. All rights reserved.
