While Kutztown owns a winless home record, the eight losses are against opponents with a combined 79-33 record, as of Jan. 9. This includes five opponents with 10+ wins. During the 1-2 start in division play, KU suffered its two losses to PSAC East preseason favorites, East Stroudsburg and West Chester. Meanwhile, Cheyney earned its two wins against Shippensburg and Mansfield.

2-12 overall 2-2 PSAC-E Lost 6

LAST TIME OUT: Kutztown lost its sixth consecutive game, as the Golden Bears lost 54-48 at Slippery Rock on Wednesday. The Golden Bears overcame a double-digit second half deficit, building a 48-47 lead with 2:59 left after two Austin Ford free throws, capping a 21-5 run. However, the Rock scored the last seven points and held Kutztown to its lowest point total of the season. Tracy Peal led all scorers 17 points, achieved on 7-of-15 shooting. DOUBLE J, DOUBLE DIGITS: With freshman forward Josh Johnson (Norristown, PA/Norristown) scoring three points on Wednesday, it marked the first time in his Kutztown career that he did not score at least eight points. He owned a double-digit scoring streak of nine games to start the season, marking the longest streak by a KU freshman to start his career since Butch Hills, a Kutztown Athletics Hall of Famer did so in his first 10 games in 1985-86. Johnson, a two-time PSAC East Freshman of the Week, averages 11.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this season. THE PEAL DEAL: Sophomore forward Tracy Peal (Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll) leads the team with 15.5 points per game. Peal now looks like arguably the top focal point offensively since Tyler Brooks suffered a knee injury, as he leads the team with 166 field-goal attempts. He also has 5.5 rebounds per game, which ranks second on the team, behind Josh Johnson‘s 7.0 average. STOP THE THREE FOR VICTORY: Through 13 games this season, Kutztown‘s success so far stems largely on its defense from three-point range. The Golden Bears allowed their opponents to shoot 11-of-67 (16.4 percent) in their three wins, far from the 33.5 percent allowed overall. LINE OF BAD LUCK: Like any defense, the Golden Bears cannot affect an opponent’s free throw percentage. Kutztown’s 76.1 opponent free throw percentage tops all teams in the PSAC. Meanwhile, the team offensively ranks 17th in the conference by shooting 65.3 percent from the charity stripe, ranking the Golden Bears just ahead of Mercyhurst (64.9 percent). GOLDEN ROAD FOR IMPROVEMENT: The Golden Bears earned victories in their first three road games. As of now, Kutztown owns a 3-2 road record, with the losses at Pitt-Johnstown and Slippery Rock. This surpasses the road win total from last season, when Kutztown finished 2-12. The 3-0 road start was a first since the 2009-10 season, when the team finished 23-8. FRESHMAN ON POINT: Freshman point guard Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) held his “breakout” party on Dec. 17, when he scored 12 of his team-high (and season-high) 27 points in the final six minutes of an OT road win at Clarion. Over his last eight games, Beidelman is averaging 12.5 points per game and is shooting 80.0 percent from the free throw line.

Looking in the Other Corner: the Cheyney Wolves

SOMETHING’S GOT TO GIVE: While the Golden Bears are off to an 0-8 start at home against teams with a 70.5 winning percentage, the Wolves are off to an 0-6 start on the road. The six losses including four teams that won at Kutztown (West Chester, USciences, Seton Hill and Cal). The six opponents own a combined 53-28 record (65.4 winning percentage). PRIMARY WEAPON: No player in the PSAC sees the ball in scoring situations more than senior forward Deshawn Curtis. He leads the conference with 223 field goal attempts. Still, he makes the most of his usage, scoring a PSAC-best 21.6 points per game while shooting 43.0 percent from the floor. He also averages 8.7 rebounds per game. HEY THERE, COACH: Wolves head coach Dominique Stevens is in his sixth season with the program. Stevens was a member of the 1984 Dobbins High basketball team that featured Doug Overton, Bo Kimble and the late Hank Geathers. Stephens also helped to lead North Carolina Central University to the 1989 NCAA Division II championship as a sophomore.
