10-17 overall 6-10 PSAC-E Won 1
Kutztown women’s basketball travels to face West Chester University in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Championship Tournament. The Golden Bears advanced to this spot after winning in the first round at Shippensburg, 83-74. This game will continue an extensive recent history that sees the two teams play for the sixth time in two years. KU won all three games last year, including an 83-72 triumph in the PSAC First Round. Now, the Rams look for a three-game sweep, as they won 83-81 in December and 81-65 in February. Advia Campbell has 15 blocks in the two games.

LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears didn’t allow two 29-point regular season losses to deter their desire to advance in the PSAC First Round. They avenged a regular season sweep by taking down Shippensburg on the road, 83-74. Kutztown’s bench held a 40-3 scoring advantage, getting 17 points from Kara Funk and 16 points from Kelsey Watson. Funk got the job done via free throws, hitting a season-best 13 from the charity stripe. Watson went 8-of-11 from the field. Also, Alyssa Bonenberger posted a double-double, with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the game. REACHING 300: With the win, head coach Janet Malouf earned her 300th win at Kutztown. In her 20th season, she reaches a career milestone now that 40 other active Division II head coaches reached in women’s basketball. Only four coaches in PSAC history earned 300 wins while coaching at an institution in the conference. Malouf is a three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year. PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: This women’s basketball tournament features the top six teams in each of the two divisions, with the top two teams on each side earning a first-round bye. The semifinals features the bye teams hosting playoff games. East top seed Bloomsburg hosts East Stroudsburg, while West top seed Edinboro hosts Indiana, Pa. Also, East two seed West Chester hosts KU, while West two seed Gannon hosts California, Pa. The semifinals begin this Saturday. GOLDEN RIVALRY: Kutztown and West Chester are no strangers to recent postseason battles. Last year, the Golden Bears shot 55.4 percent in their 83-72 win in the PSAC First Round, marking their first postseason win in seven years. However, the two schools have competed elsewhere in the postseason. Last year, KU went 4-1 head-to-head against WCU in postseason games that spanned three sports. This year, the schools split two postseason games in women’s soccer. STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: With four points on Saturday, junior forward Advia Campbell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) failed to score in double figures for the first time in eight games. Yet, in a year which she took her game to the next level, she’s been particularly strong against West Chester. She earned the school’s first ever triple-double (11 pts, 15 reb, 10 blk) in the first meeting. Then, she fell one rebound shy of a double-double (15 pts, 9 reb, 5 blk) in the second meeting. Those blocks make 21.1 percent of her school-record 71 this season (prev: Becky Savage, 68). BOARDED UP: The Golden Bears briefly began the year with rebounding success, but have since then struggled. Kutztown began the season with 144 rebounds in its first three games, earning a positive rebound margin in each game. In the 24 games since then, the Golden Bears won only four more rebounding battles and tieing two others. The team’s average -4.1 rebounding margin (36.3 to 40.5 per game) ranks 15th in the PSAC. KU hopped two spots after Saturday’s win.
Looking in the Other Corner: the West Chester Golden Rams
STEALS APLENTY: West Chester leads the PSAC in steals per game (12.58 spg) primarily because of the havoc created by the Golden Rams’ full-court pressure defense. Three players are averaging at least two steals per game (Jasmen Clark with 2.8 spg, Dallas Ely with 2.5 spg and Brittany Sicinski 2.3 spg). Anna Kuntz ranks fourth on the team with 1.7 steals per game. BIG D’S BIG OFFENSE: Sophomore guard Dallas Ely leads the Golden Rams (and the PSAC) with 19.5 points per game, largely due to high-volume shooting. She attempts 16.1 field goals per game, including 7.9 per game from three-point range. Overall, she shoots 41.9 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from three. She shot below 30 percent in four of her last five games. HEY THERE, COACH: Golden Rams head coach Deirdre Kane is in her 26th season as head coach. Through her 26 years, she’s led to WCU to 19 winning seasons and won five PSAC East titles (1992, 1997, 2003, 2004 and 2009). She also made the NCAA Division II Tournament four times (1997, 2001, 2003 and 2012). Kane owns a 431-297 record as head coach.
Games highlighted in maroon will be broadcasted on the Golden Bear Network at kubears.com (subject to change)
