Utah Baseball Faces UC Riverside, UNLV

The Utah baseball team travels to Southern California this weekend for a three-game series at UC Riverside and hits Las Vegas on Monday, March 12, for a single game against UNLV. The series against UC Riverside kicks off on Friday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m. PT., and continues on Saturday, March 10, at 6:00 p.m. PT. Game three is on Sunday, March 11, at 1:00 p.m. PT. The Utes continue on Monday, March 12, at UNLV at 2:00 p.m. PT. Rykker Tom is coming off a strong weekend at the plate, hitting .400 (8-of-20). He is on a nine-game hitting streak. Dominic Foscalina drove in five runs over the four games, driving in three runs in game three against Santa Clara, which included a two-run home run. Freshman Shea Kramer drove in runs in three of four games for four total RBI, including his first career home run. On the mound, freshman Brett Brocoff allowed one run and three hits with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in game three against Santa Clara. Junior Josh Tedeschi set a new career high with 10 strikeouts in game three against Santa Clara. Senior Trenton Stoltz allowed just one hit with four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings in relief over two games. Utah is ranked fourth in the Pac-12 in batting average (.267) and hits (105). The Ute pitchers rank fourth in the league in strikeouts (92). Utah is second in the league with three pickoffs. Individually, freshman pitcher Brett Brocoff leads the league in strikeouts per nine innings (12.60) and is tied for first overall in total strikeouts. Senior Tanner Thomas is tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with 19 strikeouts. Oliver Dunn and Chandler Anderson are tied for third in the conference with four stolen bases. Wade Gulden is tied for third in the league with two triples. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., is 11th in the Pac-12 with a .387 batting average and Dominic Foscalina ranks 11th in slugging (.600). UC Riverside is 4-7 on the season, recently dropping two of three games against San Francisco. The Highlanders have a two-game midweek series against Valparaiso before taking on the Utes. UNLV is 11-1 on the year and are currently on an eight-game winning streak. The Rebels swept Fresno State last weekend and face CSU Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge in a midweek series and have a three-game series hosting Iowa before facing the Utes.

Infield

· Sophomore Oliver Dunn is in his second year starting at second base. He is hitting .262 and is third on the team in hits (11) second in RBI (6, tie) and has a double and a home run. He is tied for the team lead (and third in the Pac-12) in stolen bases (4-for-4). Dunn recently went 2-for-3 with a home run against San Jose State. · Dunn has a .252 career batting average (62 career games). · Senior Wade Gulden has started 10 games at first base. He is hitting .250 with a team-leading two triples (tied for third in the Pac-12), two doubles, and four RBI. Gulden is coming off a 3-for-3 performance against San Jose State. · Gulden has played in 119 career games with 78 starts between the infield, outfield and designated hitter. He has a .247 career batting average. · At third base, Ryker Tom is hitting .313 and has a team-high 15 hits. He leads the team with five multiple-hit games and his current nine-game hitting streak leads the team. He is tied for second on the team with six RBI and has two doubles. · Tom hit .400 (8-of-20) last weekend against Santa Clara and San Jose State and with eight hits and a double. · Tom transferred from San Diego before beginning his freshman season. · Freshman Matt Richardson has played in and started seven games at shortstop and is second on the team with a .360 batting average. He has a double, a triple and a stolen base. Richardson is on a three-game hitting streak. · Freshman Shea Kramer has started at first, designated hitter and catcher over nine games (seven total starts). He is hitting .200. Kramer has five RBI, a home run and a double on the year. He hit a two-run home run against San Jose State in his last outing. · Redshirt freshman Braden DeBenedictis has started four games at designated hitter (six total games) and made one appearance as a sub at first base. He is hitting .176 on the year. DeBenedictis went 2-for-4 in game one against Nebraska in his best game this season. · Redshirt freshman Davis Delorefice is tied for third on the team with a .333 batting average, leads Utah with six runs scored and has two doubles. Outfield

· Junior DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., leads the Utes with a .387 batting average (11th in the Pac12) and is tied for the team lead with three doubles. He is tied for second on the team with five runs scored. Keirsey has played in 10 games with seven center field starts. He is tied for second on the team with four multiple-hit games. Keirsey is 4-of-7 (.571) with runners in scoring position. · A two-time All-Pac-12 player, Keirsey has a .314 career batting average. · Junior Chandler Anderson has started every game in left field and is hitting .208 on the year. He is tied for the team lead with three doubles and is also tied for the team lead (and third in the Pac-12) in stolen bases (4-for-4), and is also tied for second on the team with five runs scored. Anderson recently went 2-for5 in game three against Santa Clara. · Anderson has 51 career outfield starts (87 games) with a .286 career batting average. · Sophomore Dominic Foscalina has started in both center and left field (eight starts) in nine games. His return is unknown. · Freshman Shea Kramer has also started three games at catcher (see under ‘infield’ for more).

Pitchers

· Junior Kyle Robeniol has started three games and has a 4.40 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 14 1/3 innings pitched with an 0-1 record. Robeniol had six strikeouts in his last start against Santa Clara. · Robeniol earned All-So-Cal and all-conference honors at Orange Coast College in 2017 after transferring from Oregon. · Senior Tanner Thomas is tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with 19 strikeouts. He has a 4.60 ERA over three starts (15 2/3 innings) with an 0-1 record and has surrendered just four walks. · Thomas had a career-high 10 strikeouts against Oral Roberts. · Thomas has pitched in 47 games (six starts) with a 4.47 career ERA and 82 strikeouts. · Freshman Brett Brocoff, Utah’s Sunday starter, leads the league in strikeouts per nine innings (12.60) and is tied for first overall in total strikeouts. He has a 4.20 ERA (second on the team) and is 0-2 on the year over three games and 15 innings pitched. · Brocoff is coming off a strong performance against Santa Clara in game three of the series, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched. · Brocoff was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Player of the Week against Oral Roberts when he tied the school record with 12 strikeouts. · Brocoff was a 28th-round selection in the MLB Draft out of high school to the Atlanta Braves. · Junior Josh Tedeschi has made three appearances (15 1/3 innings) in long relief and has a 4.70 ERA with 14 strikeouts. He is 0-3 on the year. · Tedeschi set a new career high with 10 strikeouts in game three against Santa Clara. · Tedeschi has 31 career appearances with a 5.21 ERA and 2-3 record. · Senior Trenton Stoltz leads Utah with six appearances.
